I'm heading to Alamo Drafthouse in SF tonight to take part in a 21 hour marathon viewing of movies. That's Star Wars 1 through 9, with live performances of the 501st Legion, and some bits of trivia and games. Rogue One and Solo will not be included.

I haven't watched episodes 1-3 since they were in theaters and I'm curious if I'll like them any better now than I did then.

@docpop I’m amazed this is still online, but it makes for some great reading going into Ep III: http://darthside.blogspot.com/

@docpop I get to be that guy—The row of blue in the Grand Moff rank insignia goes on top.

docpop,
@docpop@mastodon.social avatar

@jimfl darn it, I thought I checked it before I put it on my vest today, but you are right. I put it on upside down.

@docpop Perhaps you’re trying to signal a distress situation? “Help, me! The Emperor’s minion is forcing me to blow up a whole planet!”

exkclamation,

@docpop oooh, important question: what order are they showing the films?

Release order?
Numberical order??
Machete order???

docpop,
@docpop@mastodon.social avatar

@exkclamation it’s the nine episodes from lowest number to highest. So it started with 1, and we are about to end it with 9. Even though I don’t love all the films,I always wanted to try watching them this way.

exkclamation,
@exkclamation@mastodon.social avatar

@docpop oh cool!

I watched 1-6 in numerical order in prep for the Force Awakens… it’s wild how much the narrative of the overall story changes with that sequence!?

How is/was it going through all nine this way?

docpop,
@docpop@mastodon.social avatar

@exkclamation I wrote about it here if you are interested https://docpop.org/2024/05/the-skywalker-marathon-22-consecutive-hours-of-star-wars/

My short answer: Viewing them in order didn't change much for me, other than forcing me to watch movies I haven't seen in twenty years, and realizing they weren't as bad as I thought they were.

@docpop awesome! Looking forward to reading your thoughts (and finding out how the marathon viewing went!)

@docpop great write up! And very interesting conclusions.

I watched the full run years ago—through the eyes of my young son—and while we’ve had many repeat viewings of episodes 4-9 since, rarely has there been a desire to rewatch the prequels more than the first time. But reading your story makes me think we should give the whole batch a go again.

8 hours in and we just finished the prequels. It’s 4am and time for a New Hope.

docpop,
@docpop@mastodon.social avatar

17 hours into the marathon. It’s been really enjoyable so far, I even enjoyed the prequels more than I used to, but I’m really dreading episode 8, “The Last Jedi”, which is about to start.

@docpop Curious how many people made it for the whole time.

docpop,
@docpop@mastodon.social avatar

@deborahyz I’d guess that we are at about 50 people. I think we started with around 300. Episode 8 just ended, so people are stretching their legs and using the restroom before episode 9 begins.

I'm fully rested after a 22-hour-long viewing of the 9 main Star Wars films at Alamo Drafthouse in SF. I wrote about my experience during the Skywalker Saga marathon, and how my opinions changed after seeing the films all in order. https://docpop.org/2024/05/the-skywalker-marathon-22-consecutive-hours-of-star-wars/

@docpop ooh wanted to see what you thought - gonna read this now!

@docpop great writeup! I wanted to go when I first heard they were doing this but then forgot about it until you posted you were going and at that point there were very few tickets (like 5) available all in terrible spots so I didn't go but kinda wanted to. Do you know about 4k77 and all the other original trilogy projects? they are amazing and have the best versions of those movies. Maybe I'll show them in my backyard some time for fun!

docpop,
@docpop@mastodon.social avatar

@genex I haven't heard of the 4k77 before, thanks for sharing that. I found some info about it here, though I've never properly learned how to download from usenet. https://www.thestarwarstrilogy.com/project-4k77/

@docpop
I'm not sure if you're aware of this (I wasn't) but if you're not, or if someone else isn't, re: your desire for a better transfer of the original trilogy: https://www.thestarwarstrilogy.com/

docpop,
@docpop@mastodon.social avatar

@intransitivelie thanks for sharing that. As a coincidence, I just learned about the 4K restoration projects earlier today, but haven't watched them yet. I wrote about them in a different post https://mastodon.social/@docpop/112395462806020643

jwz,
@jwz@mastodon.social avatar

@docpop There's a fan edit of eps 1-3 called "The Last Turn to the Dark Side" that condenses them to 2:45 and omits most of ep 1. It's... not terrible? It manages to take three movies about... whatever the fuck they were about, accounting and tax irregularities I guess? and redirect them into a movie about an asshole monk with anger-management issues. It also may have actually helped that the torrent I found was approximately VHS quality. Made it feel retro.

kimbro,
@kimbro@sfba.social avatar

@docpop I did not know this was a thing, and would've planned my weekend differently if I had.
I bet Alamo's between-movie fillers will be among the highlights.

docpop,
@docpop@mastodon.social avatar

@kimbro I love those fillers! I usually get to the theater 40 minutes in advance to watch them all... tonight I'll be aiming to get there right before the show starts.

As far as attendance, if you don't want to do the whole thing, I think they have some sort of system where you can snag a seat from someone who left early. I don’t know how that works exactly, but they say if I leave the building, I lose my seat.
