homesweethomeMrL, in Biden urges Congress to approve Ukraine aid bill, slams Republicans over inaction

Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, traditionally a vocal supporter of Ukraine, urged fellow Senate Republicans to vote against the bill.

“I hope all of our members vote no,” McConnell told reporters on Dec. 5, tying his opposition to the bill with Republican demands to strengthen migration border policy at the U.S. border with Mexico.

Well look at that. Moscow Mitch being Putin’s bitch again for five more seconds of gross abuse of power. Yeah, big supporter. republiQans are hot fucking garbage.

At this point, I am not sure if this is all down to Putin or Russia. I would have assumed that Russians would revolt but they seem very passive and accepting of what their country is up to

It's a miracle. Even those who will be killed by Putin won't even try revolt. They're just passive and accepting as you say.

Burn_The_Right, in Republican senators demand that Biden immediately hand over ATACMS missiles to Ukraine

Biden is already sending them. The conservatives listed here are on-record opposing Ukrainian support. Now they are pretending Biden isn’t doing enough. This isn’t about helping Ukraine. This is just about inventing reasons to be angry at Biden.

Every word uttered by a conservative is deception or manipulation. It is not possible for a conservative to be honest. Never, ever trust the word of a conservative. Never.

correcthorsedickbatterystaple,

i dislike the idea that your political leanings make you untrustworthy (generally). i hold a number of positions that would be considered to be conservative. i don't feel that my political beliefs make me untrustworthy. being a member of the US Republican party shift things a bit, because the organization has shown that it prefers power over honesty so voluntary membership reveals a few things about you. but that's the party. the US Republican party i don't believe can be trusted, but having conservative leanings doesn't make one untrustworthy.

Transcendant,

Unfortunately, every conservative party I know of has gone full on batshit, so you can understand why people associate conservative supporters with that mindset. It must be hard to have genuinely oldschool conservative values right now if you’re not of the vast cadre of people who are only conservative because the shithead parties say what makes them feel good.

paddirn,

After the weapons arrive, they’ll start saying, “Why are we just giving away Americans’ most powerful weapons to Ukraine? They’ve already killed hundreds of thousands of Russians with our weapons. bedrooms, in Media: Nearly 100 Leopard 1 tanks stored in the open as Switzerland rejects transfer to Ukraine

Wondering if they'd just ignore Swiss refusal and never buy through Swiss arms dealers again.

LordR,

Apparently about 20 of those tanks were sold to a German company in 2019. So they don't belong to Switzerland and are not located in Switzerland. I really hope at least those cam be given to Ukraine...

Needing approvement for re-export is not some magical Swiss law but the rule all arms trade is based on.

Sure, you can just ignore it. But then nobody will sell you anythjing anymore, because no country is willing to sell any of their military technology without control who gets their hands on those pieces.

Heresy_generator, in Putin claims Russia outpaces Germany and is now one of world's five largest economies

in purchasing power parity

Background: Last week, the media reported on rolling blackouts in Russia. In Dagestan, for example, local authorities stressed that modernization of power networks was necessary, since problems had not been solved for 30 years. However, as of today, there are no funds to implement this.

Last week, the wholesale price of petrol in Russia has not only broken records numerous times, but also reached a historic high.

And this week, a number of Russian regions announced the absence of gasoline and diesel fuel at gas stations.

[If the Russian people had money and there were things to buy we'd be doing great! Obviously, the people have no money and there's nothing available to actually buy, but still...]

SpicyPeaSoup,
SpicyPeaSoup avatar

How does russia, of all places, have a petrol shortage?

Skua,

I'm only guessing here, but it could be that they're exporting absolutely as much as possible to try to make up for sanction-induced shortfalls

FaceDeer,
FaceDeer avatar

I bet they're also unable to refine it. The black goo you pump out of the ground isn't useful without a lot of sophisticated processing.

Skua,

Russia does have refinement capacity which, at least in the broadest terms, should be sufficient to cover its own usage. That assumes that they're exporting very little refined oil though, and also doesn't cover how much of that refining and consumption is specifically fuel for vehicles.

awwwyissss,

Does that account for oil infrastructure damaged by Ukrainian strikes? I know at least one refinery was hit, and pipelines have been sabotaged.

Skua,

It doesn't, no. I've got no special expertise on the matter and wouldn't know what to look for to account for it

awwwyissss,

Same, just curious. I guess both countries are trying to stop the other’s income streams. At least Ukraine will have support rebuilding and stabilizing their economy after this.
