Meanwhile I have learnt to know when "Why don't you talk more?" is just meant as that smalltalk phrase without the intention to hear me more talking because I would get ignored anyway. But that might also be due to the fact that in such a situation others mostly talk about things that I'm either not interested in or know that much about. Or simply because I don't have to say anything about it at all (so why even bother talking then).
@anopka@autism101@actuallyautistic Most in my community just want you to agree with them, and don't care to hear beyond that. It's felt more to do with their narcissism.

I also remember trying to ask my Mum what I should say in order to "talk more". She replied that I should just join in with conversations as though that was an easy thing to do (and an idea that I wasn't already failing miserably at!).
In hindsight thought, I wonder if Mum didn't actually have a very similar autism to mine so she couldn't helpfully advise me (i.e. with the literal phrases to use in specific situations) because she faced the very same problem of not knowing them herself.
