I’m more certain than ever that the first quarter of 2024 will see a grand reckoning for companies that have bet big on . As I said before, I predict a lot of CFOs getting sticker shock at their compute bills, and we will see pivots and downscaling of expectations across the industry. By the middle of the year, there will likely be a general cool-down as users and investors come to grips with what “AI” can realistically do at reasonable cost (hint: not as much as the hype claims). Strategically deploying smaller models will become quite attractive, rather than monolithic solutions.

I also think 2024 is the year of the legal reckoning for the industry. Creators whose work have been used for training (i.e. plagiarized) will likely make big inroads into establishing legal frameworks for compensation, and some models will become poisoned because they were trained with unvetted data. Hopefully this also means that model-makers who have been meticulous about their training data’s providence will reap rewards.

Tick tock.

I'm a little bit confused as to why this surprises anyone. It's always had the hallmarks of a hype bubble.

@drahardja I hope Elon’s terrible timing on overspending on AI infrastructure will completely wreck him and his companies.

@ukuku That would be very good.

Here we go.

The frenzied hype around AI kept expectations high. The earnings calls disappointed. 2024 is going to be a year of reckoning.”

@drahardja “Investments in AI haven’t paid off as handsomely as the market had been hoping.”

Say what? The AI wave has just begun. For better or worse, this craziness started very recently. If it pays off, it’ll take a while to show. Data centers don’t get build in a day, you know? And the software that’s supposed to trickle down the perceived benefits? Even longer to get right. The quote above from the article is laughable.

@titociuro But money is expensive. Today is no longer the day of the unlimited money supply.

@drahardja It certainly doesn’t help to hear McDonald’s wanting to add AI to the drive-throughs across America. It may even save them money, but it seems to me that some companies are going a bit overboard on this AI thing. Like… does my toothbrush really need some good AI sprinkles? Really?

@titociuro My toothbrush didn’t need Bluetooth or WiFi either but here we are…

"Hopefully this also means that model-makers who have been meticulous about their training data’s providence will reap rewards."

The number of people who really consented to having their text used as training data is probably near zero. No one can be meticulous about "I gave people a way to opt out and buried it where no one can see it."

drahardja,
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@RichPuchalsky That may be so, but even that is better than the massive theft that has otherwise occurred.

There are model makers who are more meticulous than others when it comes to provenance.
