Victoria: Hundreds of patients died after catching COVID in Victorian hospitals, new data shows

Almost 1 in 10 patients who caught COVID in hospital died.

Documents obtained by ABC News under Freedom of Information laws reveal at least 6,212 patients caught COVID in hospital in 24 months — 3,890 in 2022 and 2,322 in 2023. Of those, 586 died — almost 6 per week, on average — with men dying at a higher rate than women (11 per cent vs 8 per cent).

At first, when I glanced at, "Hundreds of patients died after catching COVID in Victorian hospitals," I thought, "Whaaaaat? COVID wasn't around in the Victorian era!?" Oops.

Most important, I'd have to say graphic design, given that I did it for a living, and that wouldn't have happened without the transition to entirely digital work.

Feeling miserable because of allergies.

I was not always suffering from those issues as I grew up on a farm and used to help with the hay work in the summer.

So the fact that I am now experiencing hayfever symptoms is the consequence of .

Despite taking a powerful allergy medicine it is still not safe to go outside for me.

This is why when we talk to you so often about the on this account, it is not because we are being greenwashed.

It is because it is affecting my health and our in a significant way.

It is also why those who would like to deny the climate issues are very unwelcome on this community, I could not give less of a damn about their opinions.

The slow collapse of downtown commercial real estate is continuing. I suspect news like this, and stories about the decline of retail around downtowns that depend on daily commuter traffic will come in at faster and faster rates.

Workers are not returning to the office to work. and are showing to be a perfectly viable solution that is more friendly to workers. Even with hybrid work, the volume of people commuting is far lower than it used to be.

is slowly declining to a new, lower-value equilibrium.

There is no such thing as to "believe" in climate change. It has nothing to do with beliefs, it is not a theory...

It is real, it is measurable and if you observe the facts you can easily tell that the climate around you is changing.

I don't believe that climate change is real, I have experienced the changing in our gardens and it has affected my health.

At the end of the day, your beliefs are very irrelevant to the situation, what matter is what are you going to do about it?

Do I want to be remembered as the angry one in the corner who did not act?

If one day my kids ask me what have you done for the planet I want to tell them what I did and prove them that I cared for their planet.

Happy we only borrow this planet from the next generation, they will see us as careless and uncivilized fools if we keep doing nothing.

I really don't love this thing

• I don't love that I can't turn OFF file sync that I never use
• I don't love that many top-level items (like ‘Stock & Marketplace’) are false fronts that just open a web browser.
• I don’t love that prominent UI here is trying to sell me more seats — and I can’t hide it!?!
• I don’t love that it can’t auto-fill the 2FA login codes when they come in via text message

Thank you for letting me vent about this thing

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

She's right.

One day, years ago, I was riding BART (transit train). Across the aisle was a group of boisterous young men, talking loudly. I felt they were making fun of me. I don't know. But they had me on edge, watching warily.

Their conversation drifted onto another subject, then one of them said, "When you feel you stuck in the never, come back to the now."

In that instant, everything changed. I understood what had been only a distant concept before. When you can, however briefly, rest in the present moment -- with all its awkwardness, with all its fear, with all its discomfort -- in time you come to realize you don't have to be swept away in all that.

You might even be surprised to discover something precious. I'll always be grateful to that stranger for being my teacher.

@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

Man, not again. sells seriously under-specced devices to maintain their “starting from…” price and then upselling people to actually-usable models. Remember those 16 GB flash iPhones they kept selling (2010–2016! I checked!), even though that meant people didn’t even have enough space to update their OS? 8 GB RAM is that, once more, but for runtime memory.

I think the 256 GB flash, 8 GB RAM minimum-spec Mac is a low-resource trap for anyone who wants to use a computer for more than light web browsing (and I mean light—web pages are resource hogs these days) or a messaging client. They are certainly not suitable for anyone wanting to locally store or edit media.

For 2024, I think 512 GB flash and 16 GB RAM should be minimum for MacBook Air, while 1 TB and 32 GB RAM should be minimum for MacBook Pro.

I had a minor argument with someone the other day, who insisted that 8 GB in a Mac was actually a usable spec.

People on Twitter are debating whether a person using uncommon words like "delve" are trying to sound smarter than they are, or worse, are ChatGPT bots, because "normal" people don't talk like that.

You don't have to get upset, or embroiled in the debate. Not worth the time or attention. But I'll share some important context as your friendly neighborhood Nigerian 🙋🏿‍♂️

Many Nigerians have bigger English language vocabularies and better command of grammar than the typical American or English person

EverydayMoggie,

This has been the bane of my existence since I was a little kid. I use what I consider a perfectly normal word, and get called a "walking dictionary."

Bigger vocabulary and better grammar than most Americans is a pretty low bar.

The tallest building in Taiwan, half a kilometer high, survived the big quake just fine - in part thanks to a 'tuned mass damper'.

It's a 660-tonne steel sphere hanging from wires: a pendulum designed to reduce quake vibrations by 40%. It's yellow and it hangs from the 92nd to the 87th floors, visible from inside the building. On 8 August 2015, strong winds from Typhoon Soudelor made it swing by 100 centimeters. I don't know how much it swayed during the quake.

It's inspired a popular mascot in Taiwan, called Damper Baby. I'll show you the actual steel sphere, and then Damper Baby.

drahardja, to ai
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

I’m more certain than ever that the first quarter of 2024 will see a grand reckoning for companies that have bet big on #AI. As I said before, I predict a lot of CFOs getting sticker shock at their compute bills, and we will see pivots and downscaling of expectations across the industry. By the middle of the year, there will likely be a general cool-down as users and investors come to grips with what “AI” can realistically do at reasonable cost (hint: not as much as the hype claims). Strategically deploying smaller models will become quite attractive, rather than monolithic solutions.

I also think 2024 is the year of the legal reckoning for the industry. Creators whose work have been used for training (i.e. plagiarized) will likely make big inroads into establishing legal frameworks for compensation, and some models will become poisoned because they were trained with unvetted data. Hopefully this also means that model-makers who have been meticulous about their training data’s providence will reap rewards.

EverydayMoggie,
@EverydayMoggie@sfba.social avatar

I'm a little bit confused as to why this surprises anyone. It's always had the hallmarks of a hype bubble.
