Mulling getting back into #cycling after many years away from it, but the idea of throwing several thousand euros at a decent bike is harshing the buzz. Still have a 1998 racer with Dura-Ace that got a dinged frame when a car knocked me off and broke my foot in 2015, the last time I rode.
@sanityinc Saw a guy I know on the side of the road fiddling with something on the drive train of his expensive new road bike. I called out "you okay?" as I neared. He yelled back, "yeah, just some software thing." I'd say good call on keeping the old bike.
@dabeaz yeah, I'd be extremely likely to get something in titanium with mechanical shifting, because I value longevity over novelty. Wtf is the point of a bike that stops working if its gear-changer battery runs out?
While titanium has rust proof qualities, it seems there are still lots of ti frames that end up breaking in the weld area after a few years. Turns out that despite all titanium builders using Argon it is hard to have a totally non atmosphere contamined welds and lots of ti frame that should have lasted a lifetime end up being suddently useless after a few years of use.
@oook@dabeaz apart from the danger aspect, at least there's a lifetime warranty on many such frames. Cracked joints used to happen on custom steel frames too, tbh.
