@terrorjack that sucks, but congrats on levelling up

If I had a massive surplus of funds (LOL) Iโ€™d absolutely buy myself a monochrome sensor camera. https://www.pentaxforums.com/articles/photography/new-golden-age-bw-photography.html

@baldur If Fuji made a monochrome x100, I'd be all over it, just to more fully recover the Leica B&W experience.

It's interesting, an automatic watch - it doesn't just accommodate, it depends on you. If you don't wear it, it dies

@chris__martin are you liking the Seiko? Which did you get?

Can you teach "taste" in design? I'm not sure I can, but I know it when I see it (or fail to).

sanityinc, to cycling
@sanityinc@hachyderm.io avatar

Mulling getting back into after many years away from it, but the idea of throwing several thousand euros at a decent bike is harshing the buzz. Still have a 1998 racer with Dura-Ace that got a dinged frame when a car knocked me off and broke my foot in 2015, the last time I rode.

sanityinc,
@sanityinc@hachyderm.io avatar

@dabeaz yeah, I'd be extremely likely to get something in titanium with mechanical shifting, because I value longevity over novelty. Wtf is the point of a bike that stops working if its gear-changer battery runs out?

sanityinc,
@sanityinc@hachyderm.io avatar

@oook @dabeaz apart from the danger aspect, at least there's a lifetime warranty on many such frames. Cracked joints used to happen on custom steel frames too, tbh.

sanityinc,
@sanityinc@hachyderm.io avatar

@dabeaz @oook yikes, I guess just be happy if nothing cracked on you

Also Doctors: Makes you wait for 20-60 minutes after your appointment time

sanityinc,
@sanityinc@hachyderm.io avatar

@vwbusguy did you guys in the US have open clinic times in the past? As a kid in the UK I'd just sit in the waiting room with a parent and eventually we'd get a turn. Found a local vet here who does the same, and I can't help but wonder if it's more optimal than appointments.

sanityinc,
@sanityinc@hachyderm.io avatar

@vwbusguy oh, this was just at the regular family physician's practice, so not necessarily urgent care, but yeah, I guess it fits in that sub-ER space!

I don't recommend being interested in computer things beyond writing small programs that are useful or fun. It's not really good for you.

There's no such thing as progress in / without your mind also getting rewired and transformed, but the mind-body aspects don't cause changes in each other. They just both change and blur together.

Sad to see the #Nix Foundation drive out (or at least fail to retain) one of the top project contributors. Keeping excellent people engaged in a healthy, supportive OSS community is more key to long-term success than having events sponsored by any particular organisation IMO. https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/306702

Hot take: yes, many software engineers write terrible commit messages, but the "Conventional Commits" rules are no help at all.

What is? Valuing clear writing, and caring about your collaborators.

What's a good watch if I want it to be reliable, not require battery changing, not be stupidly huge, and be only as expensive as necessary for quality reason and not just for the sake of impressing anybody or pretending it's some kind of investment? I do not ever intend to submerge it in water (what the hell) but do often get dirty. A second hand is a must and noise is intolerable.

Helped a big-brained colleague solve a frustrating problem simply by hanging out on a call to provide moral support. A huge part of success in software work is calm determination and not getting demoralised or dopamine-starved.

Proposal: A way to support both mercurial and git with the same repository source. They're so close and it might help the initial learning curve for new developers if they could walk a bit with mercurial before having to run with git.
