A bunch of collaborators interviewed for this story about one of my co-workers at the Great Lakes Laboratory for Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. During electrofishing surveys of Harbour, Christine Boston regularly catches *huge which had been released when they outgrew people's home aquariums. They disturb plants and littoral areas and have no predators because nothing can eat them.

@DrPlanktonguy @futurebird “nothing can eat them” sounds like a challenge. Need to figure this out, for the environment

@webframp @futurebird lack of predators statement is related to the large ones, small Goldfish are consumed by predators. One thing which may ultimately control their numbers is (another) introduced virus, the Koi Herpesvirus (KHV).

Carp are the Brassica of fish—
pigeons are the Brassica of birds— unless that’s chickens…

Virginicus,

@DrPlanktonguy How do they taste?

@DrPlanktonguy I've been glad to see so much of the fishkeeping hobby talking honestly in recent years about how much better it is to keep fish that will be happy in the size tank that you've got

but we have a loooong way to go with the Petcos of the world

(I've def kept invasive species...and I've had to euthanize a couple over the years, and while that's not fun it's part of the responsibility)

@sarae often aquariums or larger fish focused pet stores will take fishes which have outgrown their habitat. I also think there is a lot of "oooh" I want that without considering how fast they grow by home aquarists. We have also found fishes in surveys which will never survive our winter conditions, which is good in one sense of not being invasive, but terrible for the welfare of the fish that someone dropped to "be free".
