Day 4 of attempting to daily drive postmarketOS Linux on a OnePlus 6T:

📶 I felt brave this morning, so I handed over my SIM card to Linux. At first, the phone didn't recognise the card, but the wiki page helped me resolve the problem quickly. I had to increase the config value sim_wait_time and reboot the phone to make it work. Mobile data and receiving texts work flawlessly. I haven't tried sending texts and making calls yet.

⏰ Yesterday, I also used the Clock app to set an alarm to wake up and a timer when cooking, and it actually worked fine, even with the phone locked.

🚈 I also had my train ticket checked today. I was able to present the QR code without any issues.

Update: I made a test call and it worked! At first I didn't hear anything, then I noticed my "media volume" was at 0% and "earpiece" was at 100%. I turned the other up and it worked. It seems like the distinction between media and earpiece is a bit buggy still.

I haven't touched my Android phone all day. So far, the only gripe I have is that I can't take photos because the camera of the OnePlus 6(T) isn't supported yet. 😔

Idcrafter,

@fell does the camere atleast work inside of waydroid?

@Idcrafter I don't think so. The kernel is missing the camera driver entirely at this point. I think it needs to be reverse engineered. @cas would know about this.

@fell I have a cheap second SIM in my 6T but don't use it as my main phone because call audio has some major issues. VoLTE isn't implemented yet so the only way to get calls working is to manually fall back to 2G service. Now they're going to shut down the 2G networks so this workaround won't last much longer. When calls do work the earpiece also has an issue where it stops working so you can't hear the other person. LTE data and SMS are flawless though.

@CalcProgrammer1 I barely ever make or receive calls, so I should be fine.

Update: successfully texted my wife 👍

@fell
A few more posts like this and I might buy one. (The 6T, not the wife.)

@ozzelot I would keep my eyes peeled for used ones on Ebay. I recently got another one for just above 70€.

@fell
I have an OG Pinephone (and it mostly just sits in its box and sometimes goes to a conference), but the 6T's specs are definitely... a tad higher, and if PMOS works that well, it seems to be worth it.

@ozzelot While it's certainly not as smooth as Android, I haven't had any real performance issues. Apps start up quickly, I never run out of memory, and Firefox maintains a stable 60 FPS. Only @Tuba seems to be dropping frames when scrolling. I'm sure they're working on it, though.
