conditional_soup, in What is that plant?

Looks a hell of a lot like stinging nettle at a glance. Do the leaves have angry little hairs on them that hurt to touch? Congratulations, you likely have A N G E R Y spinach, use hot water or a hot pack to decompose the venom (formic acid, which is heat labile a little below 100f) and cook the leaves for a delicious spinachy snack.

cyborganism,

Oh shoot. That’s what I thought but I was surprised it could end up in our pot. I’ll be careful then.

Oisteink, in What is that plant?

Looks like brennesle

cyborganism,

Aw crap. Yeah it does look like that.

Oisteink,

It’s a great plant!! Edible and stores nitrogen so it’s great as fertiliser

Don‘t Touch the leaves😉

markstos, in What would a lone botanist be doing in the woods?

A rare plant specialist would be camping in the woods on a multi-day trip to check on remote rare plant populations that can only be accessed on foot.

Source: recently had a rare plant botanist spend several hours on a family property to survey what rare plants were there.

drewisawesome14,

Perfect! How exactly do they survey them?? Like do they journal? Take photos?

markstos,

Let’s start with what he was wearing. Hiking boots, thick canvas pants, technical tee with backpack and full brim hat. On one shoulder strap a simple click counter was clipped with a carabiner. If he runs into a bunch of plants that are too many to count by hand, he uses the click counter.

Over his socks he had tick gaiters, over those, hiking gaiters and over those snake gaiters.

I believe took his phone/camera as well pencil and paper. I’m not sure if he used paper or digital topo maps for navigation, but he must have had those along with the property boundary, because there were no trails or fences where he went.

He also took some plastic ribbon to tag specific plants so we could find them later.

A couple weeks later he sent us a report and map of the rare plants with their names and locations.

drewisawesome14,

Dude this is perfect thank you!!
