FujiTive, in New to Linux - is Pop!_OS for me?

If you just want to learn Linux and you have never tried it, maybe before buying an expensive PC just for the sake of having a pre installed Linux distro, you should first try Pop!_OS in a VM. You can as well install Pop_OS! for free on an old PC. If you feel comfortable and want to support System76 then buy one of their machines, but first I'd try it

mmstick, in The ability to choose the default file manager in COSMIC would be amazing
@mmstick@lemmy.world avatar

The file manager isn’t hardcoded to anything right now, and I don’t see much point in doing so. We will have our own file manager that fits in with the COSMIC aesthetics and technologies though. We should be able to create something that will make Nemo and Dolphin users want to switch to COSMIC’s file manager.

DestinyGrey,

Super happy to hear! I look forward to trying it out on my laptop. Thanks for chiming in with that bit of information.

M4775,

This is great news. A file manager and hybrid editor written in Rust by System76 sounds too good to be true. Add a Rust based simple music player and I’m in heaven.

Yes, but the file chooser application hasn’t been designed & developed yet.

mmstick, (edited ) in Reason why Wayland isn't enabled by default?
@mmstick@lemmy.world avatar

Some graphics cards from AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA have severe issues with Wayland in this version of GNOME. Some applications have graphics corruption, have broken functionality, or otherwise crash in some circumstances in the GNOME Wayland session. So until COSMIC is released, X11 is the default for GNOME. There are still some areas of the Wayland protocol that are being actively discussed to resolve, and therefore it’s better to make this optional rather than default.

Nuuskis,

There isn’t any other IT company in the whole world which can compete with System 76 in quality of service. Truly stunning.

wintermute, (edited ) in Limit Battery charging on Laptop ?

check

cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/charge_start_threshold

and

cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/charge_stop_threshold

i.e.

echo 45 > /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/charge_start_threshold
echo 75 > /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/charge_stop_threshold

RGBTinkerman,

Also when I did “echo 45 > /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/charge_start_threshold” in sudo, it said "bash: /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/charge_start_threshold: Permission denied "

RGBTinkerman,

Hi, thanks for replying ! when I ran, " cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/charge_start_threshold" it turned “cat: /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/charge_start_threshold: No such file or directory”

bjmaz, in Will Pop_OS run OK on an old Surface Pro

I’ve been running Pop!OS on my Surface Pro 6 (i7-8650U) for a while now (with the linux-surface kernel!), and touch/pen support is relatively good; only weird thing is the limitation around what the pen can do; e.g. you can touch-scroll with your fingers (and other gestures) but you can’t use the pen to scroll; the pen behaves more like a mouse, e.g. it will highlight text instead of moving the page (which makes sense)

You shouldn’t have any issues with installing the base OS; the keyboard cover should just work; but pen/touch doesn’t work out of the box, so to get that you will need the linux-surface kernel. I use the https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface/wiki/Package-Repositories (as Pop!OS is a Debian or Ubuntu derivative - they use the same packaging system). Note that you will also likely want to tell the package manager to “hold” the installation of the non-surface kernel, using https://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/focal/man8/apt-mark.8.html. You’ll probably want to hold linux-headers-generic and linux-generic. (I think I have particular versions held as well.)

I quite like to use the “Xournal++” app for touch/pen friendly writing/drawing, and have also used it for signing PDFs (though only the visual type of signature, not the digital type like Adobe does).

Thanks! I didn't consider putting a hold on the kernel. That is a great tip!

I got it working on an old Surface Pro 3 I had sitting around. Haven’t tested the pen, but the touchscreen and Windows button work fine for me, which is amazing! I just had to turn off secure boot or whatever to install.

spxak1, in Will Pop_OS run OK on an old Surface Pro

You certainly need the surface kernel, so check on github's linux-surface project for more.

Ashiette, in Will Pop_OS run OK on an old Surface Pro

It will run just fine. Almost every and any linux distro will work more than fine on a PC with these specs.

edit : I have a KDE distro running flawlessly on a 3rd generation i5 and 6Gb RAM. Sure, I don't use graphic-intensive programs on it but apart from that it's fine for work/everyday casual use

Pyrozo007, in Does anyone actually use LibreOffice?

I've been using it for years for all personal office suite uses.

Along with GIMP for photo editing

ProtonBadger,

Same, I've used a lot of office suites over the years so they're all the same to me. LO is free so I use it at home and store my files on Cryptomator+Dropbox.

Excited for Gimp 3.0, the dev snapshots are working well now but I'll need the Resynthesizer plugin.

fuck spez

I have relied on using reddit as my google search for literally any topic or question I would have. I've had lots of laughs, met a lot of friends, and helped a lot of people. I have learned sooooo much from other people on a topic I was so lost about and most of the time they were extremely helpful or nice

I'm nervous that kbin might not become the new source of information (since google absolutely sucks ass). If anything it would take a long time to grow just purely out of members and data, considering reddit had to grow in order to be my search database. Either way, I'm hopeful. This place feels cozy

It'll take time but I'm glad you and I both are here. Google may suck but over time they and other indexers should hopefully pick up on the information being created here and we'll gain relevance in search. I want more people here, I want a shift in how the internet and forums work. And if we reach a critical mass one day, I hope the decentralized nature of the Fediverse will prevent the same downfall Reddit is experiencing. I want a more permanent place to hang out online.

daq, in BIG announcement?

I sure hope it is a laptop with ARM. RISC-V would give me a hard on I’d have to call my doctor about, but new Snapdragon X Elite would be awesome as well.

yeehaw_cosmonaut, in BIG announcement?

This might be wishful thinking, but I’ve been so excited to how Project Virgo turns out. An in-house design from System76 would be amazing, and I hope more info is released soon.

greatbarriergeek, in BIG announcement?

Couple of ideas: At the end of the first quarter they were originally going to release the alpha for their Cosmic DE which got postponed. They also had the LinuxFest NorthWest conference they presented at.

zockerr, in BIG announcement?

Remember, this is System76, not necessarily pop os. Personally, I’d guess it’s gonna be some new hardware.

humuhumu,

you are absolutely correct. This community is more popular so I posted here
