So the new laptop has a slight issue. Every now and then a sliver of the top of the screen flickers white...it has done the same on linux/KDE, windows and even a tty shell, so it's probably a hardware issue, right?

Loose screen connector maybe? I'm scared to re-connect the connector because on my old laptop it took a lot of fiddling to get it back in and working.

Thinkpad E16 Gen 1.

@mightyspaceman uh, yeah that’s a hardware issue, especially if it appears when you are in the bios config screen. If that happens, take a video of the behavior and get a warranty repair

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm ummm yeah imma go ahead and update the BIOS as there is a set of severe updates from after I ordered it...

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@mightyspaceman oh those are normal, likely Intel Management Engine security vulnerability fixes

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm ah well I did it anyway, not sure if it actually updated though because it said something like "BIOS self-healing backup progressing" after it did it's thing.

probably because I used ventoy instead of actually flashing the iso.

But I didn't see any flickering in the BIOS, and haven't seen any yet

I'll keep you posted

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm nevermind it's still there

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm also the f4 key keeps flashing whenever I type

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@mightyspaceman yeah definitely a couple of faults in there. Damnit.

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm welp I guess what would I expect from a model only released a few months ago

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm seems to be...fine now? for now

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm same with the flashing f4, it's gone now

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@mightyspaceman lol did the firmware update stick?

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm hmmmm it seems to have fixed the f4 key but the flickering is still there

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm was just lookiing around in the BIOS, and saw it. so it's a hardware thing

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm reseated the screen connector, problem persists. calling up support

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm support passed me on to one of the more experienced guys...as in the kind that you get sent to when it's not a simple matter of turning it off an on again.

had me update the BIOS again, it says it was up to date so that means the one I did myself stuck...had me wiggle the monitor...no result

opened a case for me and said that I could reply to the email with it connected to an external display to check if it is a display or motherboard issue. If it's not they can send an onsite technician or give a refund

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@mightyspaceman on-site tech is a nice touch

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm reseated the screen connector and now it's bricked. doesn't turn on, no charging lights.

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@mightyspaceman uhhhhhhhh well fuck

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm was talking to @leofebey about it

I still think I may be able to get away with acting as if it just happened when the technician gets here, like it's part of the original issue

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm @leofebey but I just don't see why simply reseating a screen cable could do that

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm alright the technician came around while I was at school, didn't tell them that I had possibly bricked it soooo they're basically going to replace the mobo after deciding that it's basically a goner

luckyy

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm funny thing, the thing with the f4 key, it also flickers when I tilt the lid and press into the frame. possibly a short somewhere?

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm not sure if I saw it in the BIOS screen or not, probably can't since the flickering is usually white and so is the BIOS background..

mightyspaceman,
@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

The area seems to be getting wider over time, and frequency is increasing.

@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

Or BIOS issue?
