We do need a shake up of sixth-form education https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/09/23/we-do-need-a-shake-up-of-sixth-form-education/. If people are to compulsorily study maths and English in the sixth form, make sure that what they're taught relates to the real world, not an academic objective. Then it might just be useful.

My old maths teacher always said that arithmetic and the fundamentals of finance (interest, tax etc) should be compulsory. Maths which is a really abstract subject on algebraic manipulation should be an option from year 9. I do genuinely use maths in my job but I totally see that I'm a tiny minority.

Also horrified that my kids left school not knowing how loans, banks, foreign exchange and government finance works.

@TenPastTwo @RichardJMurphy I wonder if the government would really want a generation of young people with good financial and statistical literacy. Would make things like austerity harder to sell.

For sure. Financial illiteracy is no accident.
