@dhrystone@stephenrobles upscaling the frames is different than inventing new frames though. I'll take 4K upscaled frames at the original frame rate over "true motion" any day of the week. Upscaling is not without its issues, of course, but by comparison it's relatively benign. All IMHO of course. 😀
@cetan@stephenrobles I literally hate looking at video in 24fps now. So used to the smooth motion on TVs over the last five years or so, not to mention the 60fps video generated on my phone and the 120fps on my PS5. I absolutely don’t understand why people don’t like it.
@stephenrobles What's the thing on Sony (I think?) TVs where it like, takes an average of the picture's brightness and dims the entire backlight at once in darker scenes?
I watched something at my dad's house, and every time a (white) subtitle came on the screen, the backlight would ramp up, then back down once the subtitle vanished. Bright, dim, bright, dim, bright, dim, AGGGHHH
@greg@stephenrobles It's a list of the names different TV brands use for motion smoothing (and the list is part of instruction on how to turn it off, because it makes everything look awful).
