Episode two of . Liking it so far. No bullshit ad-infinitum claptrap storyline building, some good CGI so far, keeps things moving. Dialogue happens along with the action - thatā€™s what Iā€™m finding I prefer lately. No boring scenes where characters sit on a bed or face to face across a diner table and discuss x, then y, then z, then but what if I a b and c, then itā€™s like no, you a b cā€™d once before and it didnā€™t work out and just get to killing fucking Godzilla already

Appleā€™s new Journal app appeared on my phone, so I made two one-line entries to try it out.

I donā€™t plan on using it again, or on recommending it to others.

With no (apparent) share or export facility, itā€™s a hard pass from me. Why, Apple? Is this a beta?

dhrystone,
@dhrystone@techhub.social avatar

@ellane Watch how many people use it just because itā€™s there. (Except me because itā€™s iOS17+ only)

dhrystone,
@dhrystone@techhub.social avatar

@ellane Yep, in the sense that I play with and test every single thing I can - software, operating systems, hardware etc. For fun. I would then weigh up its merits against the current pack leader, . So far, though, it doesnā€™t sound like a particularly worthy contender. I guess Iā€™ll never find out for real.

Just started : Legacy of Monsters. Looks fairly bingeworthy based on the first 20 mins. Definitely not a boring slow burn start like .

Current binge list comprises seven diff shows. Imma gonna need to get a job real soon..

@mrmasterkeyboard Specifics? Iā€™ve seen people say theyā€™ll outright refuse to use snap if forced to in order to install any given app. Does it mess your system up somehow? I know next to nothing about either.

dhrystone,
@dhrystone@techhub.social avatar

@mrmasterkeyboard Iā€™ve honestly never used anything other than apt to install any package. Only a recent newcomer to the snap/flatpak discussion. Maybe Iā€™ll just hide under the apt rock for now..

@dhrystone@techhub.social avatar

@alxlg THANK YOU! This is a freakin great response and very interesting to learn. Did not know about OSTree.

Edit: ok, Iā€™m sold on Flatpak. Is is possible to replace snap or at least run Flatpak alongside it on regular Canonical Ubuntu flavors (that donā€™t already have it, I mean)?

dhrystone,
@dhrystone@techhub.social avatar

@mrmasterkeyboard Sold! One Flatpak, please. (places dollar bill on counter)

@alxlg Just installed Ubuntu Mate last night (to compare it with Mint Mate side by side for no particular reason). Will get her done later today. Thanks!

@mrmasterkeyboard @diwen I read this article as well - https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2024/01/valve-seeing-increasing-bug-reports-due-to-steam-snap-other-methods-recommended/

So are we kind of saying that snap as a technology is solid but itā€™s just down to mistakes made doing the actual packaging of app within the framework? I kind of like the idea of this ostree dedupe tech and the like with Flatpak. Full disclosure, Iā€™m a Windows guy, just basically curious about everything as Iā€™m always parallel experimenting and have recently read that a lot of people wonā€™t look twice at Snap lately. Wondering what that was all about.

@Siucraym Definitely seems to be the broader opinion on the net lately.

@cetan I dunno what the heck went wrong, but your post on pocketknife@lemmy.world completely broke my Memmy app. Got seemingly infinite space/scroll at the bottom of the post with no response buttons visible. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

@cetan I might try a diff app like Voyager. Some bizarre defect in the app, maybe something in the post the app just doesnā€™t like. Totally glitched it.

If you're not using an adblocker, whether at the DNS level, as system software, or as a browser plugin (or even a multilayered combination), WHY THE HELL NOT!?

dhrystone,
@dhrystone@techhub.social avatar

@trib @Fury I use four at the same time for fun and profit. I donā€™t think one even works at all (Admuncher) but I inexplicably still have it running.

dhrystone,
@dhrystone@techhub.social avatar

@trib @Fury Letā€™s not forget in the list of secure browsers!

I actually had a lot of fun a couple years ago deploying PiHole on one of my RaspberryPiā€™s and routing all my household machines through it. It worked great UNTIL.. my kid was turning in empty homework on Google Classroom and his teachers were getting up him about it. We chastised him thinking it was his fault until I finally discovered that Pihole was messing up his uploads to GC and literally causing this problem. I got super angry with it and walked away without even trying to troubleshoot. Had to profusely apologise not only to his teachers but to him.

Have not as yet tried . Maybe later today. The logo for it has a real dodgy expression on the badgerā€™s face IMO šŸ˜

@Fury @trib Install FBP (fluff-busting purity), itā€™s a browser extension that enhances FB and helps with ads.

dhrystone,
@dhrystone@techhub.social avatar

@Fury @trib Maybe not FBP but you sure can do extensions in Safari. If youā€™re talking about the IOS FB app itself then youā€™re SOL.
