Let us be honest: if Mastodon was not such a complete mess and so hard to setup and administrate, if anyone could install a full server (small instance, up to 10 users top) using a cheap second hand Linux PC and a couple of hours of work, Threads (Meta / Facebook) and others would have no power of the Fediverse.

Think about that for a second.

We are talking in reverential terms about Mastodon, but it should not be the only game in town.

@ParadeGrotesque
Isn't it basically what GoToSocial is trying to tackle?

ParadeGrotesque,
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@zii_0

From what I understand, GoToSocial is just a server.

I'd like the whole enchilada server + web interface in a high-performance integrated package.

Oh, and a pony.

Yes, I am going back to the drawing board.

kpw,

@ParadeGrotesque They don't have any power over the Fediverse.

ParadeGrotesque,
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@kpw

Really?

deckytoyou,

@ParadeGrotesque any ways or chances to start from scratch?

ParadeGrotesque,
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@deckytoyou

That is what I am looking at right now.

mi,

@ParadeGrotesque Almost no one hosts their small websites through a static IP from their home ISP or on DynDNS, with port forwarding to inside their home NAT. And these days a public IP, even a dynamic one, becomes expensive too - everyone is put behind a CGNAT. And of course the providers fail to provide IPv6. Let's not talk "Linux PCs" because it's unrealistic and just makes people feel like it's their skill issue; it is, has been for a while, and is going to be but VPS providers in the near future.

ParadeGrotesque,
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@mi

And your point is?

mi,

@ParadeGrotesque Just... let's not say "second hand Linux PC" in place of the more realistic "$4/mo VPS". It clouds up the real picture and is misleading to beginners

ParadeGrotesque,
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@mi

That is a better argument, yes.

starbreaker,

@ParadeGrotesque What I don't get is why this sort of thing can't be done with desktop apps sharing posts over BitTorrent. The Fediverse won't ever be truly decentralized as long as its platforms are designed under a client/server paradigm.

hypolite,

@starbreaker @ParadeGrotesque I believe the BitTorrent overhead for small files is even more punishing than AP. Not sure either how BitTorrent would handle edits without being a completely different file.

ParadeGrotesque,
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@starbreaker

ActivityPub, as far as I can tell, is organized around a client/server model.

Now, I believe even such a software can be made a lot more efficient and easier to manage.

Feel free to write your replacement. 😉

starbreaker,

@ParadeGrotesque If I wanted to code for free I could work overtime at my day job. 😀

ParadeGrotesque,
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@starbreaker

So do I, my friend, so do I.

hypolite,

@ParadeGrotesque @starbreaker There are actually two modes, client-to-server or server-to-server.

unixwitch,

@ParadeGrotesque
Mastodon isn't the only game in town.

There is a plentiful of other server software out there.

(I haven't tested the ease of administration, yet)

ParadeGrotesque,
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@unixwitch

A lot of them seem on a par with Mastodon for ease of installation and ease of administration though.

Meaning: they are not easy.

ParadeGrotesque,
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

And just as I was posting this, there was a fresh wave of spam from mastodon.social.

Something about spicy adult postings. Sigh.

This mastodon.social thing is out of control. I am being polite here.

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@ParadeGrotesque yeah got the same thing, with a direct mention. 🤷

ParadeGrotesque,
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@fedops

But did you click on the link, you naughty boy? 😉

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@ParadeGrotesque of course I did. Seemed totally legit! 😂

ParadeGrotesque,
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@fedops

I knew I could count on you for that risky click of the day! 😂

No, I don't want to know what was at the other end of the link.

@ParadeGrotesque
Once NextCloud Social is functional, that is my next stop.

@nextcloud , I hope this is still on the roadmap for the reasons outlined above.

ParadeGrotesque,
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@Brett_E_Carlock

NextCloud? You mean this NextCloud?

https://github.com/nextcloud/security-advisories/security/advisories

Nah, I'll pass, thanks.

Brett_E_Carlock,
@Brett_E_Carlock@mastodon.online avatar

@ParadeGrotesque
And the gatekeeping continues.

ParadeGrotesque,
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@Brett_E_Carlock

You do you, my friend, you do you.

As far as I am concerned, I'd rather have something simple to install, use and maintain than a another huge "let's throw in everything, including the kitchen sink" kind of software.

But if NextCloud can pull it off, more power to them!

autolycos,
@autolycos@med-mastodon.com avatar

@ParadeGrotesque sounds like a job for openbsd

ParadeGrotesque,
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@autolycos

Not necessarily: OpenBSD is not high performance, it is high security.

What I have in mind is more of a high-performance, low maintenance, easy installation software to interact with the fediverse.

Something like that could run pretty well on OpenBSD, but it should be portable to other OS.

Hence the 'Linux' in my original post.

dragonfrog,
@dragonfrog@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@ParadeGrotesque @autolycos I guess if the setup process were "boot from this ISO file, run through the installation wizard, and when your computer reboots it will be a working Mastodon instance" it wouldn't even matter too much what OS the kernel belonged to.

pettter,
@pettter@mastodon.acc.umu.se avatar

@ParadeGrotesque It's funny that one of the major advantages when Mastodon showed up on the scene was its ease of installation and administration in comparison to existing alternatives.

And it's definitely not the only game in town, even now.

ParadeGrotesque,
@ParadeGrotesque@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@pettter

The alternatives are either crippled or fairly hard to administrate, even today.

(Unless you have some serious recommendation, which I would love to hear about)
