I love station wagons; it really sucks that there is fuck-all for options here in the US. iirc VW stopped selling them in the states a while ago because they just couldn't sell them, which seems crazy to me.
we have a VW passat wagon that has been nothing but trouble mechanically lol. the transmission seized on my partner in the middle of an intersection -- that was a very fun bill out of nowhere.
@sampj I would never buy a modern VW. Everyone I know who has had one has had some kind of stupid and/or insane problem with their car. I don't know how they sent so wrong.
@MLE_online "stupid and/or insane problem" 100% describes my VW experiences, both personal and from people I know. my highschool buddy's girlfriend drove a jetta and her glovebox broke while the car was stationary at a stoplight. just fell open. last I saw it the glovebox was taped shut lol.
@sampj My friend in college had a Jetta and the driver side window just fell down one day. He had to tape it shut with plastic bags and drive all the way back up to LA at night like that

Oops I missed the previous series of classic wagon posts. Noted. How about this then? A '99 Outback. It's not quite as #WeirdCarMastodon as the Saab but it'll be easier to find parts and arguably more reliable, while still quirky enough to stand out among the pickup trucks as these age and less of them can be seen on the roads.
@DenOfEarth yeah but she's not going to get a pickup. She's just lamenting the fact that there are not many cars for people with families and pets unless you buy an SUV or a crossover
@MLE_online If I find myself in need of a car, I'd dig up a VW Squareback. Getting parts for these is still relatively cheap and they aren't difficult to find (although safety-wise, there isn't much there). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Type_3
@jblake I really wanted a square back or a VW bus when I was in my twenties and I ended up getting the VW bus, but I wonder sometimes if I should have gotten a square back instead
