Ceramics class!

I finished building my ring jug and I started on an abstract piece of pipes

@MLE_online I love both of these pieces! great work!

fun tangara idea: we can execute like a 'config.lua' from sd card (with an option to disable obvs) before executing the main ui lua script.

this lets you customise your theme, controls, etc., with approximately the same amount of flexibility as like... a neovim config. kinda cool.

I've been hosting a source engine server (SRCDS) lately, and it has very much reminded me of the power of this approach. easy access to variables and predefined helper methods gives users so much room to play while being easy to document, subsequently giving it a low barrier to entry.

all that to say, fantastic idea. your users will love you for it.

@MLE_online I love seeing parents who understand and encourage their children's interests. it's especially fun when that amounts to "check out this weird shit I found"

They had an actual maid costume ready for me for the theater this weekend so I didn't have to throw together something on my own

But it's really short lol

Yesterday I was at a thrift store with @fredy and found this little Casio TV-400. It was the fancier sibling to the Casio TV-200 I already had.

Except when I got it home where I have a TV transmitter, I discovered it didn't work

sampj,

@drdnar @MLE_online the relief of "oh this is probably a simple repair" is awesome, but cleaning off the electrolyte and praying the board isn't damaged is much less awesome

sampj,
@sampj@hachyderm.io avatar

@drdnar @MLE_online would still take it over "this transistor exploded and I can't read anything on it" though.

sampj,
@sampj@hachyderm.io avatar

@MLE_online @drdnar I assume you took a look at the other caps?

I posted a Craigslist community ad looking for people who want to join a club of weird bikes. Some of the responses are incomprehensibly horny even though I did not identify myself or say anything about myself.

But I did get one excellent reply from someone who gets it

sampj,
@sampj@hachyderm.io avatar

@MLE_online oh hell yes. this is a beautiful concept that was in turn executed beautifully. absolute respect.

@MLE_online on the note of mannequins, today I saw one in a shop with its hands crossed in front of it in typical formal fashion, such that a jacket could be slipped over the arms and be held in said position.

instead of being used this way, it had a slim-waist tailored military formal jacket on its shoulders and its breasts (complete with nipples) were visible from the sides. I was fixated on how unusual the hand positioning was and only afterward realized how weird everything else was.

sampj,
@sampj@hachyderm.io avatar

@MLE_online like, you've got the mannequin that this will fit best wearing it. why are you not using any of the aspects that make it perfect for this display. I do not understand.

so I went to an oddities store today

Charging lithium-ion batteries with the bench power supply, as one does

sampj,
@sampj@hachyderm.io avatar

@MLE_online I mean, you've clearly got the voltage limit with intentionality and knowledge. I've done the same on occasion and it's worked out fine (other than reducing the lifespan of the battery slightly, but I didn't care enough about those cells to be worried about it)

sampj,
@sampj@hachyderm.io avatar

@MLE_online oh wait are those in parallel? I assume you know the risks, so best of luck lol. you're braver than I am.

sampj,
@sampj@hachyderm.io avatar

@MLE_online so I was thinking backwards, it's series that matters. BMSes do balance charging which TL;DR trickle charges the series cells during charging to keep each cell's voltage roughly equal.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_balancing

sampj,
@sampj@hachyderm.io avatar

@MLE_online ah I'm silly and misunderstood. you're effectively balance charging yourself since you're doing one section at a time, my bad.

sampj,
@sampj@hachyderm.io avatar

@MLE_online
ok I think I'm being dumb so let me try and understand better

is the situation that you have a 3s3p pack? that would make the above mattery. if they're 3 discrete 3p packs then it doesn't matter.

sampj,
@sampj@hachyderm.io avatar

@MLE_online
so this section of the wiki article is my concern

> Under normal operation, discharging must stop when any cell first runs out of charge even though other cells may still hold significant charge. Likewise, charging must stop when any cell reaches its maximum safe charging voltage.

sampj,
@sampj@hachyderm.io avatar

@MLE_online
I'm not entirely clear on why that's the case. I've always thought about it as like the parallel packs charging each other, and that process needing time to settle out? it seems to me that it shouldn't matter if there's a voltage limit, but batteries are some black magic that I only vaguely understand lol. I've done a bunch of reading for designing laptop packs, but I used a BMS to abstract some of the voodoo.

sampj,
@sampj@hachyderm.io avatar

@MLE_online isn't the concern the difference in voltage between each set of parallel cells, that is, not the voltages of the cells within the parallel packs? since regardless of where the leads are connected they're still part of the same circuit

sampj,
@sampj@hachyderm.io avatar

@MLE_online if I've read the descriptions of BMSes correctly I think it's a combination of the two? such that each parallel pack is trickle charged to match the others during the full series charge to alleviate that difference in voltages during the charge process.

that wouldn't entirely solve the characteristic per-cell voltage ceiling problem, but I guess that would be more or less solved by the equal wear they would experience from being in parallel

sampj,
@sampj@hachyderm.io avatar

@MLE_online I think that's what you're saying and my brain is just not working well right now lol

sampj,
@sampj@hachyderm.io avatar

@MLE_online hmm the section in the wiki article about active and passive balancing makes it seem like some fuckery is required to get the parallel packs to charge each other correctly rather than that just happening naturally. that was not my intuitive understanding of the situation. maybe this is an issue then? I assume it's not super dangerous and just kinda bad for the cells.

again, brain is applesauce, this may have been what you were saying before

I'm not sure if this amazon spec sheet is entirely accurate, because it says this motherboard has a max ram capacity of 10000 TB.

where can I get a computer with 10 petabytes of RAM? that sounds handy
