Good morning fellow Mastos and hello Thursday. Thankfully the wind and rain have stopped. For now anyway! I even managed a few hours sleep last night.

Enjoy your day and don't forget to have fun and laughs. Bad puns/jokes always welcome.

Today's photo is from January 2011 and shows how chilly it had been. The ice on Yeadon Tarn was about 12cm (4.5") thick and reminded me of when I lived on a boat on the Caledonian Canal in Inverness and had to break the ice in the mornings in the boatyard!

Good morning to you too MrD.
Hope you can catch up on your sleep soon. We just had the rain, luckily not while I was doing toilet duty with the pup.

Like a typical sassenach, I can't even get the date of Burn's night correct, so on my second attempt, Happy Burn's Night 🙂.

That was quite a chunk of ice, but I prefer my whisky dry 😁

@Steampunk_Prof Morning Professor. The rain returned, just as Wesley and I were at the furthest point from home. Funny how that happens. 🤔

As a Scot, I had no idea when Burn's Night anyway, so I wouldn't worry if I was you. And as for being a Sassenach, that's actually a Highlanders' derogatory name for "Lowland Scotsman" as opposed to an Englishman. 😁

EDIT: Checked up and some dictionaries say it's only for the English, from "Saxons". But they are not quite correct! Others mention Lowlanders.

Life seems to do things like that. Need to get somewhere in a hurry, every single traffic light is at red or goes red as you get to it, the only empty till at the shop suddenly has someone with four trolleys full of stuff appear from nowhere.

NormanDunbar,
@NormanDunbar@mastodon.scot avatar

@Steampunk_Prof So true!

Traffic lights always know when I'm coming towards them. Especially the "Four way control" ones that take a day and a half to cycle round all four ways!

Sigh.

@NormanDunbar
We have a set on a local roundabout, they failed for a while and the traffic flowed much better, then they fixed them 😢

NormanDunbar,
@NormanDunbar@mastodon.scot avatar

@Steampunk_Prof Typical. If they use traffic sensors rather than just timers fine. But when I drove a motorbike I sat for ages at a set of reds that didn't know I was there. Eventually drove through and got stopped by police. Told them what happened and they had a laugh and told me if done the right thing. Aberdeen late 80s early 90s I think.

@NormanDunbar
The one here is a traffic light with a right turn light. There is a sensor in the road, so if a car isn't waiting on it, the light doesn't go green. Gets non-locals every time.

Having fun typing today. My fingers are cracked and dry from pup nibbles.
Here he is in active mode.

@Steampunk_Prof Wesley would have gutted the snake and monkey!

I'd always assumed it was related to the Welsh "Saes" which is the term for English people - also from Saxon I think.

NormanDunbar,
@NormanDunbar@mastodon.scot avatar

@suearcher @Steampunk_Prof

The word itself comes from the Gaelic Sassunach, from the medieval Latin Saxons. The Irish also used the word Sasanach for the English, while the Welsh used the related word Seisnig. Even the mighty Cornish have their own version in Sawsnek, likely from the same derivation.

Derogatory slurs against ones neighbours appears to be a very long human tradition, regardless of which side of the boundary you are on.

NormanDunbar,
@NormanDunbar@mastodon.scot avatar

@Steampunk_Prof @suearcher Just the usual tribalism at work! Nothing to see here.

Countries, towns, streets even, religions, schools, cars, clothes, sports teams. It never ends! We truly are a f2ked up species.

@NormanDunbar @suearcher
Probably, but we can always try not to be whenever possible.

The joys of historical definitions and to who they apply. I'll take it like the non-Scot that I am. It's the only UK country not represented in my direct ancestry but then nobody is perfect.

@Steampunk_Prof When god created Scotland, Gabriel looked at it and said "The seas, the mountains, the glens, the heather, the wildlife! It's stunning and beautiful!".

God said, "Wait till you see what the neighbours are like!" 😁😁😁

ROFL 🤣 So true.

@Steampunk_Prof Keep Scotland tidy. Dump all your crap in England! 😁

Maybe that's why I'm here!
