Going back through some old projects and I am once again reminded that LED strip builds age like fine milk.

@geekmomprojects i have a bin of prototypes that i look at every few months & go " what the hell was i doing here"

geekmomprojects,
@geekmomprojects@mastodon.social avatar

@wow_elec_tron I have that too, though I have them stored in a hard place to reach so I encounter them less frequently. It's so hard to get rid of projects, even when I'm sure I'll never follow up with them.

"Aging like fine milk" is a wonderfully evocative description!!

@SaguaroLynx not original, I'm afraid, but pretty accurate!

jes5199,

@geekmomprojects does that mean the project I abandoned in 2018, I should restart from scratch?

geekmomprojects,

@jes5199 I hope you have better luck than I seem to!

@geekmomprojects In the sense that the adhesive fails to adhere, or something else going on?

geekmomprojects,
@geekmomprojects@mastodon.social avatar

@Stormgren a LOT of failures in my solder connections, as well as a lot of glitchy LED strips that weren't that way when I stored the project.

avatastic,

@geekmomprojects how have LED strip builds changed over the years? Are there now more LEDs per inch than in the early days, and have the revamped versions of the projects reflected that, or are the projects very much of their time?

geekmomprojects,
@geekmomprojects@mastodon.social avatar

@avatastic to be fair, some of it is that I've learned a great deal about making projects sturdier over time, and my soldering has improved a great deal. However some of the problem is that LED strips that were working fine when I stored the project are glitchy now

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@geekmomprojects @avatastic I have found a failure mode whereby the silicon potting on the led strip dries out and grips the led chips and pulls them off the flex board.

@ratkins @avatastic that could be a thing here
