Sad to hear that UKNOF is another casualty of recent times and is not going to continue in its current form. I enjoyed the few events I attended, even though it was at the periphery of my expertise. Not as down as I am about UKUUG disappearing, but I guess times + people move on.

I keep meaning to write a 'running voluntary organisations' guide with the things I've learned over the years, maybe this is the prompt to get on with it.

It is very difficult to find good volunteers, especially for chair, treasurer and secretary, and even harder to balance experience vs freshness vs not-burning-out.

@pwaring The hardest thing as a volunteer executive is realizing that you're no longer part of the mission, but part of the machine that facilitates the mission. If you like operating the machine so that other folks can accomplish the mission that's great, but usually you joined the org and rose through the ranks because you loved the mission, not bureaucracy.

@vees And even if you do like operating the machine (as I do), often it's unappreciated because people think you're not 'part of the mission' (e.g. complaining that you're not doing any campaigning... because you're too busy doing all the essential admin).
