Vulture club.

Six large lappet-faced vultures over at the waterhole in the Namib desert just now, with temperatures around 39ºC.

But don't go there – it's very addictive 😉

That stream ate several of my hours last year. I would say in a good way.

markmccaughrean,
@markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

@knud I often leave it on in the background, change to another tab, & get shocked when a tussle breaks out between the Gemsbok & jackals 😬

@the_guruji@astrodon.social avatar

@markmccaughrean omg there's a jackal there and i can hear it drinking the water. this is too precious.

Oh, funny. I just followed them here:

    @grb090423 It runs 24-hours a day, with infrared illumination & cameras at night. It's a very calming thing to have running in the background.

    @markmccaughrean @grb090423

    And the water-hole is automagically self-replenishing.

    That sounds about right. "Stelle" is stars in Italian, so you are not wrong ;-) And obviously it is a fusion-powered device, solar fusion...

    No! It's to elevate oneself by obscuring the simple underlying technology (after having read the description underneath the video).

    markmccaughrean,
    @markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

    There's one vulture left now, but two jackals have joined.

    Really – don't go there 🤪

    markmccaughrean,
    @markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

    I mean, if you foolishly decide not to heed my advice, you may see oryx, ostriches, porcupines, hares, magpies, & much more.

    It is a serious waste of your time 🙃

    @markmccaughrean The family couldn't see what the attraction was for me of the Icelandic volcano webcams in recent years. Until, that is, I pointed out that the whole family's favourite seaside pastime is to dam streams and change their route to the sea.

    OooO! Oryx!

    Can confirm. Don't go there. I went there a few months ago and never came back...

    @brunthal Fatal.

    At least there is enough water :-)

    markmccaughrean,
    @markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

    @brunthal If you can persuade the neighbours to let you get close to it.

    @jaztrophysicist I meant “don’t go the website”, not “don’t go to Namibia” 🙂

    I was in Namibia many years ago for the inauguration of the HESS telescopes - an amazing and beautiful country with a sad history. Rather amusing to see the German colonial buildings with steep pitched roofs to throw off the snow which of course never falls.

    markmccaughrean,
    @markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

    @Luke_Drury @jaztrophysicist IIRC, HESS is near the Gamsberg, a flat topped mountain part owned by the MPIA in Heidelberg. It was supposed to host the 2.2 metre telescope that later ended up in La Silla & perhaps also the 3.5m now on Calar Alto (my memory is fuzzy on this).

    hfalcke,
    @hfalcke@mastodon.social avatar

    @markmccaughrean @Luke_Drury @jaztrophysicist And we are now trying to build a mm-wave radio telescope on the mountain and have asked the Max-Planck Society to sell the mountain back to Namibia, which is likely going to happen. Now, we still need a better road ….

    knud,
    @knud@mastodon.social avatar

    @hfalcke @markmccaughrean @Luke_Drury @jaztrophysicist

    Selling it back? I think that would be really great. Our northen science approach was rather colonial in the 1960s. And beyond.

    markmccaughrean,
    @markmccaughrean@mastodon.social avatar

    @knud @hfalcke @Luke_Drury @jaztrophysicist I’m all for it, as long as the proceeds are spent on a waterhole in the grounds of the MPIA where we can watch the Wildschwein 🐗
