I just found out that Samsung has a physical fuse in their devices that will blow to prevent operating system rollbacks. That sounds like a very good way to blow out a totally functional piece of hardware because of one software glitch. Seems like a design flaw to me. I like Samsung software to an extent, but I will call out apparent design flaws, where I see them

@evilcookies98 Lots of companies do this so they can tell if you've unlocked the bootloader as well. Huawei install an E fuse in the Nexus 6p for this very purpose. A Nexus. The phone you were meant to tinker with.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@PepperTheVixen that’s messed up. Our phone should be our choice as to what we want to do with it. It’s none of their business once it leaves their building.

Just remember: if buying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing.

@PepperTheVixen although clearly it is to them, so therefore they should get out of our faces and leave our stuff alone

blindmouse88,

@evilcookies98 Oh wow!!!!! That sounds like a good idea for functionality lol.

ratking,

@evilcookies98 erm, and where did you hear this?

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@ratking on the android subReddit

ratking,

@evilcookies98 I don't know if i'd fully buy it, it seems far fetched to me

dhamlinmusic,

@ratking @evilcookies98 Nope it's real,

The Knox warranty fuse, also known as the Rollback Prevention (RP) fuse, is set at manufacturing time, ,

Basically it's a hardware any root anti rollback device that literally bricks the device and voids the warranty if you try to rollback the OS, root the device, etc

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@ratking @dhamlinmusic like I said, sounds like a good way to blow out a perfectly good piece of hardware because of one software glitch. That thing needs to go. Can I have design flaws for 2000 please Alex?

dhamlinmusic,

@evilcookies98 @ratking It also prevents rollbacks of fuck ups on samsungs side from being fixed by a rollback from them because of how it's implemented.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@dhamlinmusic @ratking two words, design, flaw

dhamlinmusic,

@evilcookies98 @ratking Nah Samsung calls it a "security feature"

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@dhamlinmusic @ratking well, Apple calls they’re not letting us do anything security features too, but that doesn’t make them right.

ratking,

@evilcookies98 @dhamlinmusic I bet you if Samsung issues the rollback it'd be perfectly fine.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@ratking @dhamlinmusic something is simple as a failed update could break it though. Software updates fail all the time. I can say that because it happened to my computer the other day.

dhamlinmusic,

@ratking @evilcookies98 Nope, that apparently has happened, they cannot just rollback, they have to issue a new version of the old version with a valid newer key to not trip it.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@dhamlinmusic @ratking they could avoid having to do that entirely by not being so ridiculous with their hardware. Living in North America equals inability to unlock the boot loader? Total BS. Think about if some update fails and totally wrecks the OS, but has already tripped that thing.

ratking,

@evilcookies98 @dhamlinmusic Unlockign the boot loader is not advised, on any phone unless you really have a godo reason to do so.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@ratking @dhamlinmusic the mere act of unlocking it isn’t going to break anything though. If you’re irresponsible with what you do after you unlock it, that’s a different story. That unlocked boot loader could save your phone if something eats the operating system.

ratking,

@evilcookies98 @dhamlinmusic The chances of somethign takign out the OS without it doing damage to the phoen too is small.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@dhamlinmusic @ratking failed updates can happen. You just never know. Glitches aren’t always predictable.

dhamlinmusic,

@ratking @evilcookies98 True, but this thing is insane, from what I have found looking into it it can be tripped by something as simple as incorrectly leaving samsung’s own beta program for OS updates.

ratking,

@dhamlinmusic @evilcookies98 If it's so sensative why hasnt' it been much more of adeal, and why haven't I heard of it beign a samsung use rsince the S5 days?

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@ratking @dhamlinmusic because manufacturers as a whole have this nasty tendency of covering up design flaws or not taking responsibility for them I bet

dhamlinmusic,

@ratking @evilcookies98 Seems it went super stupid in mid 2021 update.

ratking,

@dhamlinmusic @evilcookies98 so you're going nuts over something that's almost 3 years old?

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@ratking @dhamlinmusic i’m saying it seems like a pretty big design flaw. That corruption issue with the 15 developer preview that some people are experiencing? Imagine if something like that happened during a regular release on a device with a boot loader that is literally incapable of being unlocked to flash.

ratking,

@evilcookies98 @dhamlinmusic Most normal users are not going to think of unlocking or flashing. doing something like loading 15 has it's risks, especially this early in the game.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@dhamlinmusic @ratking here’s the thing, though, if something breaks your OS that bad, I don’t care what kind of user you are, you have to flash unless you want to shell out hundreds of bucks on a new phone. 15 isn’t so bad, especially now that the thing causing the corruption has been pulled. it was the OTA image that you loaded through the ADB menu. The past through the flash is fine. It’s that rule about glitch is never being predictable.

ratking,

@evilcookies98 @dhamlinmusic a normal user, sho is not techy is not going to flash anything. not everyone even knows what that means.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@ratking @dhamlinmusic they may not have a choice if their software corrupts. That’s the only way to fix that. Yes, the odds might be slim, but I can describe several updates that have broken stuff. They’ve been pulled, sure, but people have had things break.

ratking,

@evilcookies98 @dhamlinmusic Then, how would you explain it to them? You'd expect them to hook their phone up and do it themselves, assuming they have a computer in the first place wich some may not.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@ratking @dhamlinmusic better than having to spend 1000 bucks on a new phone.

ratking,

@evilcookies98 @dhamlinmusic Some would rather do that then go technical. My wife for example is completely clueless about unlocking boot loaders and flashing images.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@ratking @dhamlinmusic with the way the economy is, a lot of people don’t have a choice. They have to fix what they’ve got, and whatever way it takes, or take it to someone who can. My advice to anyone who isn’t technical is hope and pray to whatever higher power you believe in that you have friends who are.

ratking,

@evilcookies98 @dhamlinmusic You make it sound so easy. It isn't as simple as that, especially if you're in an area like we are. Now I know a bit about this stuff but I even have limits on what I'll attempt.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@ratking @dhamlinmusic I am a firm believer that there is one nerd in every neighborhood. Too bad I don’t have the necessary certifications and the recovery menus don’t talk, or I would offer to do it myself for anyone who needed it. A lot of factory images come with batch files these days. Plop the stuff in the right spot, run the batch file, done.

ratking,

@evilcookies98 @dhamlinmusic Sadly, the one who'd be closest to that in this area, is me.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@dhamlinmusic @ratking i’ve been looking at how the factory images are packaged. A lot of the ones I’ve seen lately come with a batch file and shell script. That right there makes it theoretically doable for me to do it, assuming I don’t have to poke the phone in the process.

dhamlinmusic,

@ratking @evilcookies98 Nah that's when they changed how it worked to be this absurd, the biggest issues people seem to have have been the official beta program blowing it when moving off beta to stable, along with third party repair shops not using "approved" parts which also can trip it.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@dhamlinmusic @ratking well, if they insist on being like that, I hope no one‘s devices ever corrupt because if they do, they’re utterly screwed

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@ratking @dhamlinmusic that’s kind of ridiculous. We already have one apple. We don’t need two. They need to let up.

dhamlinmusic,

@evilcookies98 @ratking Trying to access the bootloader will also trip it.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@ratking @dhamlinmusic which, again, we can’t do in this part of the world. The switch isn’t even there.
