@lilithsaintcrow difference between opt-in and opt-out

Opt-in: I ask you before kicking your ass
Opt-out: I kick your ass and ask if you want more or I should stop

@lilithsaintcrow I swear, people have handwaved me away like I was some kind of Chicken Little everytime I said if you use a free website builder the TOS let them do what they want with your content.... so not surprised one iota. Guess I'll close my baby tumblr account.

Yes, this is Wordpress dot COM. Wordpress dot ORG is run by a nonprofit and presumably not part of this nonsense--unless Automattic starts using Jetpack to scrape open-source software users' sites, which will be a real bloody mess legally and financially.

KitMuse,
@KitMuse@eponaauthor.social avatar

@lilithsaintcrow Considering it requires Jetpack to be installed before certain plugins gets installed, well I wouldn't put it past them. Also Jetpack causes serious site bloat.

    @lilithsaintcrow @KitMuse

    Everything in jetpack is available elsewhere. jetpack is simply convenient.

    Look at what you're using, and replace it piece by piece.

    lilithsaintcrow,
    @lilithsaintcrow@raggedfeathers.com avatar

    I'd say “that would never happen, the nonprofit would never let it happen" but given how the CEO of Automattic has been behaving lately, Jetpack could become a liability. We'll see.

    As things stand, buying one's own domain and hosting one's own site using WP software is the best available option, especially since one can import a blog one's exported off Wordpress dot COM. This is my opinion, which I reserve the right to change if the situation warrants.

    And again, using Wordfence to block user agents for "AI" theft/scraping bots has been a good solution for me. The bots absolutely do not respect the robots.txt file, ever.

    lilithsaintcrow,
    @lilithsaintcrow@raggedfeathers.com avatar

    Yelling at me about how much you personally hate Wordpress open-source blogging software from the nonprofit will not do anything but get you a block, so just...don't. Take it to your own goddamn feed and don't snitch-tag me, either.

    @lilithsaintcrow thanks for mentioning wordfence. I’d not heard of it. I left WP for a static site generator a few years back but I support a few folks who run sites. This will help them.

    @lilithsaintcrow Thank you for this info and 🧵.

    So for a WPcom website, it’s not complicated to migrate the whole shebang over to WPorg? (Apologies for not being totally conversant on this.)

    @lilithsaintcrow For years now I've been concerned that Jetpack was a potential pain point for self-hosted WP bloggers who can't comply with the porn-hostile TOS at WP dot com, which are incorporated into Jetpack by reference. Although an Automattic person did indicate the incorporation-by-reference wasn't ever intended/enforced. Does make me wonder whether the TOS incorporations-by-reference could apply to data consents also, but I haven't looked yet.

    @lilithsaintcrow Interesting! It seems to me (five year old memory) that I originally looked at it for some SEO-helpful features that I eventually accomplished with Yoast or abandoned completely as chasing Google stopped being worth worrying about in the adult space.

    @ErosBlog Google shitting the bed has absolutely freed me of any desire to have any sort of SEO. I’m full feral now. :P

    Jetpack slowed down my personal site, so I dropped it.

    It's still on my bookstore, but I've moved "replace jetpack" up to the top of my to-do list.

    @lilithsaintcrow Surprisingly little!

    bunny.net for CDN, WP Statistics for stats, and WP Forms Lite for contact forms. Only thing I paid for is bunny.net, but that's like $25/year. Worth it.
