Comparing Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim user interface you can tell that Skyrim tries too much to be minimalistic. Oblivion had custom icons for everything, spells, items, and attributes. On top of that the UI had a ton of flair. Too bad this is all lost in Skyrim.

@dimillian I never really liked the modern trend of game UIs. A guy I know described this as the "boxification" of UI: everything is a giant box or some minimal text element. We lost a lot of the fun aspects of game UIs.

Skyrim was still early on this trend, but I can see the early effects of it.

@thek3nger, it makes sense for the in-game HUD, and actually, Skyrim does a stellar job at this. But for full-screen blocking UI, I don’t get it. Maybe it’s about production value; it takes a lot of time & effort to draw all those 2D icons.

@dimillian And Morrowind looked like a desktop environment. But I liked the UI for dialogs.

@DerMolly Morrowind PC first UX was the best IMO. Oblivion was also delicious and worked great on both PC and console. Oblivion UI has so much more flair than even Morrowind, tho. Miss those days.
