My web development tip:

Try to use your fancy JS web form while you're on a train. See if it still works. Most don't.

@tomw
On German trains it's hard to load the web site at all.

@tomw Train I ride once a week has WiFi, but you can't click the checkbox to accept the terms and conditions until the custom font has loaded 🤷‍♂️

@nigeljohnwade Gotta love it!

@tomw I find cruise ship WiFi a good challenge for development of network equipment.

@tomw Nothing on the internet works in the UK when you’re between good 4G coverage (every time the train leaves a station). It’s all or nothing. Even my 11ty personal site won’t load. 3G has become the new GPRS/Edge.

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@SamStrong Yeah - what's frustrating is the kind of site that works fine in good signal, breaks itself in the bad signal patch, and then totally fails to recover once signal returns

autiomaa,
@autiomaa@mastodon.social avatar

@tomw @SamStrong Packaged mobile apps can be even more difficult to debug, because physical network failures can cause error states that are basically almost impossible to simulate. That is why some mobile telecom operators have isolated testing environments where they can give app developers time for testing errors with a physical hardware. For example, how does streaming apps work when base stations are overloaded? 4G/5G network systems have a lot of different failure states.

@tomw Trains & airports are chaos monkey for front-ends.

krisnelson,
@krisnelson@legal.social avatar

@tomw are you telling me I first have to develop and deploy an entire train network complete with sketchy wifi just so I can test my JS web forms, wow, no wonder webdev is such a challenge

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@krisnelson There is no wifi on this train, just mobile signal that appears and disappears

krisnelson,
@krisnelson@legal.social avatar

@tomw well that will make it much simpler to establish a proper test environment, as I just have to deploy a train network and let the existing mobile network do its thing

paco,

@tomw American web development tip: try to find a train you can ride to test your web form. Most can’t. 😜

tomw,
@tomw@mastodon.social avatar

@paco Maybe that explains it! No experience of what their forms do when you go into a tunnel and come out the other side.

paco,

@tomw Yeah. I lived and worked in Europe for 10 years based in London. I know your pain. But most Americans don’t, and a crap-ton of software comes out of places that have absurdly good internet, even on mobile.
