It’s always so fun to be awakened by a loud mystery noise at 4am and be up for an hour trying to figure it out. We’re in the middle of a wind advisory here in So. Calif.

@GottaLaff My mystery noise last night was a nervewracking thump-scraaaape-thumpety-scraaape-scraape-thump-THUMP.-scraaaaape....Turned out to be a large empty box being blown down the driveway, intermittently airborne then landing with a THUMP. . After the windstorm last month, we're on edge.

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@Originallyrose Wow, that had to be scary.

Originallyrose,
@Originallyrose@toad.social avatar

@GottaLaff Embarrassingly, yes, but only because so many trees blew down in the last windstorm.

@GottaLaff

It happened during the day for me, but a while back strong winds blew the spark arrestor off the top of our chimney. Huge noise, but I couldn't figure out where from.

Then I found it on the ground later, and it took a minute or two to remember/figure out what the heck it was, where the heck it came from, and then realize that it was what had caused the noise five minutes ago.

So I guess I'm saying, the odds are low, but if you've got a chimney, have you looked on top yet? 🧐

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@jztusk We'll check, thanks!

@GottaLaff I JUST THIS SECOND said to my husband here in NorCal - can you believe this wind?

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@rabbijill Omg it's crazy here. I hate strong winds.

rabbijill,
@rabbijill@sfba.social avatar

@GottaLaff and it stirs up the allergies! (As I put drops in my eyes)

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@rabbijill Ogodmetoo. My Kleenex box is empty

chefraven,
@chefraven@sfba.social avatar

@rabbijill @GottaLaff I’m outside of Sacramento and we’re in for 40MPH gusts today. Ugh. Guess I’m not going for a walk at the lake like I had planned.

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@chefraven @rabbijill Walking Hammy was cut short. He hated it.

chefraven,
@chefraven@sfba.social avatar

@GottaLaff @rabbijill 😔 Aw, that’s a bummer! And here he thought being back in SoCal, it would be nicer weather!

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@chefraven We love the weather in Canada. I think it's nicer there, meaning, the rain stops and goes, so it's no biggie, and everything smells so fresh all the time. And it's not half as bad as everyone warned, which I figured and even wrote about in my blog about moving. @rabbijill

chefraven,
@chefraven@sfba.social avatar

@GottaLaff @rabbijill That’s fantastic! I enjoyed your blog.

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@chefraven Oh you read it? The Why and How of moving to Canada? Thank you! @rabbijill

footsteps,
@footsteps@sfba.social avatar

@chefraven @rabbijill @GottaLaff we were returning home to NorCal yesterday, heading north on I-5, and the gas mileage was ~5mpg worse than normal because if the headwinds.
Riding my bike this morning - not enjoying it! Me = Hammy

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@footsteps Wow! Yeah, not a fan of strong winds. @chefraven @rabbijill

MerelyAHut,
@MerelyAHut@newsie.social avatar

@GottaLaff I know the feeling. A few weeks ago our grandson's trampoline blew over the fence on our backyard. We get some powerful winds here in the front range of Colorado.

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@MerelyAHut Wow!!

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@rdnielsen No. First a 2.5 is nothing. Also, that’s far away. But good thinking!

rdnielsen,
@rdnielsen@mastodon.online avatar

@GottaLaff
If you're far away, than distance probably rules this out, but the 'Seneca Guns' phenomenon has been observed with shallow quakes of less than 2.0 magnitude: https://www.usgs.gov/programs/earthquake-hazards/earthquake-booms-seneca-guns-and-other-sounds

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@rdnielsen This wasn't a quake. Trust me. I've lived in CA my whole life. The noise sounded like a door closing hard. No shaking. Then we heard a thump later. No shaking. As I said, there's a wind advisory. Gale force winds.

DrGeof,
@DrGeof@mastodon.social avatar

@GottaLaff

Tree falling? Or possibly a trash can making an attempt to escape?

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@DrGeof We looked. Nothing is different!
