An actually smart appliance would be a dishwasher that had exactly one button marked "start", and could figure out the minimum time, water and soap to do the job, and do it.

This is exactly the opposite of the "smart" we're seemingly getting.

@LeviKornelsen manufacturers would be quickly compromised by Big Detergent to instead use maximum soap amount to clean the dishes, plus a bit more.

@LeviKornelsen “Smart” devices dedicate their brains to one task; how to extract more private information, and then $$$ from the user of the device.

@LeviKornelsen Then there's "tries to outsmart you". You know, "Have you tried Feature Q?"/"Feature R isn't enabled! Don't you know it should be?!"/"Feature S has detected that you made a decision we disagree with and has overridden your intent."

Trouble with the "precise fill" setting on our washer is, it locks the damn lid so I can't use the pouring water to rinse the soap cup. I hate machines that try to nanny me.

They're so unnecessarily expensive, and fiddly-- my father went through all kind of shenanigans trying to repair their washer, the bit that broke was plastic and is no longer manufactured, can't we just go with a standard/modular format for a lot of these parts?

And why not rig it so you can run it with pedal power when the electricity goes out, or just for exercise? During the bad fires this whole city was down for a week-- those times will be getting more common.

Dish "washer" is a misnomer. They do actually only need one button.

They should be called "dish rinser."

@LeviKornelsen For me a smart appliance would be one that stops the incessant "I'm finished" beeping when I yell from another room, "I know you're done. Shut up I can't get there yet!"

@LeviKornelsen How about all the usual mode buttons to one side and a nice prominent Auto-Detect button next to an equally large start button?

LeviKornelsen,
@LeviKornelsen@dice.camp avatar

@Teyrnon - Even better - my main point, though, is that the intelligence wouldn't be "you can interact with it more!", but instead "You need to fuddle with it much less!"

@LeviKornelsen What? You mean you don't want your appliances to text you notices and reminders while collecting data about your activities to send to its home server?
