Per last night's stream, I still maintain that did not get hired to be on , he just actually found himself at Sesame Street one day and taught Elmo about Octagons and they just happened to record it

speaking of crossovers was reminded of this

certainly aged better than the Superman/Jared Fogel ad

Kallekatt13,
@Kallekatt13@mastodon.social avatar

@SirTapTap Wait wait wait wait wait... Superman/Jared Fogle ad? Do I really want to know?

SirTapTap,
@SirTapTap@mastodon.social avatar

@Kallekatt13 It's apparently "Subway Presents: Justice League #4" so there's FAR more to it than just this frame but it's all I can immediately find

Advertising comics weren't unheard of at the time (the Barkley issue above is real and I own a physical copy), just a particularly unfortunate example

Kallekatt13,
@Kallekatt13@mastodon.social avatar

@SirTapTap I can kinda give them the benefit on this one, his crimes weren't really well known at the time. But I do wonder what the writers of this felt after that became public...

SirTapTap,
@SirTapTap@mastodon.social avatar

@Kallekatt13 Oh yeah just very banal stuff. Ad references were pretty big at the time since everyone watched TV so stuff like the jared ads, "can you hear me now" and stuff were unavoidable

Kallekatt13,
@Kallekatt13@mastodon.social avatar

@SirTapTap How "beloved" was Jared as a "mascot" anyways? I was pretty young when he was airing (2000-early 2010s?), so I only really know him for the kiddy diddlin'.

SirTapTap,
@SirTapTap@mastodon.social avatar

@Kallekatt13 He was pretty popular, a very polite and every-man looking guy and his transformation pics were amazing, though of course largely unrelated to Subway. It really was pretty much an OJ situation

Kallekatt13,
@Kallekatt13@mastodon.social avatar

@SirTapTap That sounds like a good comparison. Albeit, Jared is actually in prison for his crimes, so at least he won't be making a "If I did it" 2.0

SirTapTap,
@SirTapTap@mastodon.social avatar

@Kallekatt13 Yeah, OJ is sort of unique in getting out scott free. More of a trumpian figure I guess. Or Cosby though none of it's directly comparable. Cosby's life's basically toast despite the (important) technicality that got him off, though on the other hand, it was so late in his life to begin with.

Kallekatt13,
@Kallekatt13@mastodon.social avatar

@SirTapTap Funnily enough, I first heard of Cosby BECAUSE of the SA:s he did. Maybe it's because I never lived through the 90s or maybe he wasn't as popular in my country as he was in America.

Btw, what was that technicality again? I forgot.

SirTapTap,
@SirTapTap@mastodon.social avatar

@Kallekatt13 Sheesh, that's definitely a cultural thing lol, I was born well after his peak but there was still cosby parodies in everything.

Well, pretty fucking BIG technicality actually, evidence was illegally obtained. Sucks he had to be released, but it was the right call. Rules have to apply to everyone, otherwise police will just "know" people did it just like the "good old days".

Kallekatt13,
@Kallekatt13@mastodon.social avatar

@SirTapTap That does suck. But we at least take some (very) small comfort in that he will probably never have that same kind of influence that he just to have!

SirTapTap,
@SirTapTap@mastodon.social avatar

@Kallekatt13 Oh yeah, his life is ruined, and given the nature of his crimes it's all but impossible for him to re-commit.

Kallekatt13,
@Kallekatt13@mastodon.social avatar

@SirTapTap Correct me if I missremember, he was put on trial BEFORE and the Weinstein stuff blew up, but only got sentenced AFTER it came out?

SirTapTap,
@SirTapTap@mastodon.social avatar

@Kallekatt13 I forget, it was pretty late, but Cosby was egregious enough it was way behind what even the worst anti MeToo trolls could defend

Kallekatt13,
@Kallekatt13@mastodon.social avatar

@SirTapTap And I thought those guys would defend literally ANYTHING these guys did!

Also, did you know that metoo actually had quite a global impact, beyond the US? We had a metoo movement in Sweden, for example, and several people were outed as being really shitty.

Carnivius,
@Carnivius@masto.ai avatar

@SirTapTap i didn't know the name jared fogel so i looked it up. and after it corrected it to 'fogle' i read about the guy.

and....fucking hell... if i ever frequented subway i wouldn't anymore. ew.

SirTapTap,
@SirTapTap@mastodon.social avatar

@Carnivius oh, both gave me an autocorrect red line so I gave up

Must not have been as big a deal over there, dude was EVERYWHERE beyond just the ads, lots of references and a whole southpark episode
