TikTok is de facto owned by the Chinese gov, which exercises totalitarian control within their own borders, plus has a known op to try to manipulate American voters and steal American IP. they are an evil actor on the world stage almost right up there with Russia and Iran

@synlogic yeah, you're right on all this, it's just weird, I mean Meta, Google, Amazon, all these other USA based companies do shady shit/collect user data, anything in an app store, really. I guess scapegoating the commies has always been USA's signature move, why should 2024 be any different 😂
@jake4480 the law Biden signed does NOT ban Tik-Tok or destroy it. it merely requires that it must change ownership. if an American buyer comes along they can take it over and service continues seemlessly. users who love it or depend on it can continue to do so
if anything I'd argue the US gov should extend the same approach to other companies and services with Russian ownership or ties. like Telegram, LiveJournal, JetBrains, Kaspersky, others

@rootcompute 🙄 the racist Electoral College will decide, as always, which is controlled by money and lobbying of course, but everyone will have a fun, cute time arguing over the puppets they put on display - and one of those puppets will lead us on a sure road to fascism. @wendigo my wife uses it a lot. This is really such nonsense. I mean, we get recipes from it all the time. It has LEGITIMATE uses. It's being made a scapegoat of just because it's Chinese. They have to be doing pet projects/quid pro quo type crap in the back rooms, yknow. As always 🙄 😑
@wendigo oh, I can see why they THINK this is a good idea. It's gonna backfire massively. I wonder if they'll just divest or something though. That would solve it. Doesn't sound like they want to, though, also. So who knows.
