A native Floridian, I am fascinated by all forms of musical expression, but I cut my teeth on heavy metal. My first five shows were Dio, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne, Megadeth, and Exodus. I am an avid progger and free / classical jazz man, too. I welcome and encourage discussion.

While I'd say I am political, I make it a point to discuss such things on my blog, which I'll be setting up shortly.

I am a music gear nerd and Linux expert, questions are always welcome.

@BlackenedGreen @jake4480 Indeed! Love it. I used to listen to it more. Guess it's time to get back on the horse because dope as fuck is dope as fuck... ;>)

May 23rd is International Synthesizer Day - and it's also the late Bob Moog's birthday. Raise a knob 🎹

wendigo,

@jake4480 Bob Moog is a pretty big deal in Asheville. There's a Moogfest and everything. It completely baffles me as to why I didn't go to the museum / facility...

Any time I try to find any kind of regular movie to go see with family or something, I'm reminded why I got into underground and horror movies. This crap all fucking SUCKS, man. More now than ever before. I mean, DAMN 😂

    @jake4480 Not me, mate! I have a Windows installed, but it's for the games. I hate that shit otherwise...

    This morning, I talked myself out of installing as I thought of all the scenarios which I would need Windows. It irked me quite a bit, Dual Booting is certainly an option; as I have invested a large chunk of my digital life on Windows, I would spend a lot of time on the Windows partition because so many programs are easier to run on that OS.

    Investing in an iMac or Mac Mini would be a safer option. As I wouldn't be using Windows, I could keep access to my iPhone troubleshooting tools.

    @WanderingInDigitalWorlds I want you to be happy, so I think you need to do whatever that is. However, I will say this, that's how Big Tech colludes. You'll jump out of one fire into another, albeit Apple is a lot more comfortable about it...

    I did download both the latest Linux Mint Cinnamon and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS; While at work, I will decide which distro to install. Even though I weighted Ubuntu lower in my list, I’m drawn to it! Tonight, I will be making bootable drives using balenaEtcher.

    wendigo,
    @wendigo@metalhead.club avatar

    @WanderingInDigitalWorlds Can't go wrong either way. You know what my preference is, but you're in good hands no matter what. Also, I would suggest putting Ventoy on your USB and copying the ISOs over to that. In this manner, you can boot from multiple images on the same USB stick. Compare and contrast. It's what I use. I must have 10 ISOs on one 32 GB USB drive... ;>)

    Backed up all my important data but I need to go into BIOS and make sure the boot order is accurate otherwise it could cause issues for a Linux installation. Secondly, UEFI is turned off already because I was Linux curious and waiting for a good time to switch.

    Most of my games are already Linux compatible but a chunk of them are not, SunnySide and Coral Island are rebuys on console. Xbox Series S and my Switch are going to help me access other gaming titles!

    wendigo,
    @wendigo@metalhead.club avatar

    @WanderingInDigitalWorlds Is turning off UEFI necessary, or are you referring to Secure Boot?

    wendigo,
    @wendigo@metalhead.club avatar

    @WanderingInDigitalWorlds Both Mint and Ubuntu support Secure Boot, but yes, it is best to turn it off until after the install. Most Linux distros don't support it, though, because it's a Microsoft thing...

    Thoroughly enjoying the IIHF hockey world championship. Glad to be watching this sport again.

    wendigo,
    @wendigo@metalhead.club avatar

    @HailsandAles Yeah, it is great, man. They really fucked it up in the United States unfortunately. But, ultimately, I blame the NHL for that. Had they kept the rights to their games instead of selling them off to ESPN+ and others, I'd have enjoyed hockey all season long like I do baseball with MLB.TV. The NHL app was pretty solid...

    @jake4480 I think I'd put them in this order:

    1. Sewn Together
    2. Rat Farm
    3. Lollipop

    But they're all really good. And it surprised me a bit, if I'm honest...

    @jake4480 Yep, I'm a lifer when it comes to Meat Puppets. Sometimes I wonder if I love them more than Husker Du...

    wendigo,
    @wendigo@metalhead.club avatar

    @jake4480 It's different. Husker Du is middle-class, barely contained, rage... ;>) I only compare them because they are my favorites of the SST bands...

    wendigo,
    @wendigo@metalhead.club avatar

    @jake4480 Well, I think the Meat Puppets did fit in in that they provided a kind of chill counterpoint. They were certainly punk, too. Just in a very different way. I really like that about them. And they tried to do a hardcore album or two... ;>)

    Seriously looking into Linux for my PC because Microsoft and their overzealous approach to AI is making me nervous as heck.

    I'm going to settle on Ubuntu as my familiarity with that Linux distro is high enough; I do need to check for any major changes with CLI commands, reworking of OS features, and the like before switching over. I don't want any surprises.

    Over the next few days, I will back-up anything I need in the future digitally.

    @WanderingInDigitalWorlds Gotcha. Linux Mint is also very nice. In fact, I like it more than Ubuntu, on which it is based...

    @alexhammy @mekuso @WanderingInDigitalWorlds Yes, Mint is behind Flatpak...

    wendigo,

    @alexhammy @mekuso @WanderingInDigitalWorlds Yeah, Snap is terrible, but Ubuntu is determined to make it work even though everyone is embracing AppImage or Flatpak...

    wendigo,
    @wendigo@metalhead.club avatar

    @WanderingInDigitalWorlds @alexhammy Nobody uses Snap but Ubuntu. Flatpak is clearly superior and easier to maintain. AppImage is even more convenient.

    I mentioned Bingo Boys' 2023 record 'Freak Out & Leave' in February, how I was upset I somehow missed it last year. They're from Indianapolis, Indiana and make some incredible catchy, melodic psych-ish garage/punk.

    I've been going through their back catalog today and they don't even have bad songs. 🤯

    Bingo Boys put out a couple singles this/last year which are unfortunately only on Spotify, but Bandcamp has several of theirs too- ALL good: https://bingoboys.bandcamp.com

    One of my favorite traditional songs as performed by the Grateful Dead. Probably well unknown for most people these days (so I'm going to loophole the rules). I picked 1977 because that was a great year for the Dead... ;>)

    @wendigo@metalhead.club avatar

    @jake4480 It does for me as well from time to time. ;>) You don't hear a lot 'American Beauty' or 'Workingman's Dead' live, though. They'll pop out a 'Truckin'', not unheard of, but Casey and the rest a bit more uncommon...

    Dragging out the 'Alien' boxset to get acquainted with all the sequels. Watched the UHD version of the first film earlier. Never get tired of it. Don't really care about UHD for the ones that follow. Should be fun. I haven't seen 'Aliens' in ages and the rest are unknown to me...

    wendigo,
    @wendigo@metalhead.club avatar

    @jake4480 We tend to forget that before 'Twister' and later, Bill Paxton was a goofy fuck. And obviously, Newt is the archetype for the little troubled kid that the protagonist takes a shine too. Talking about 'Aliens'.
