Design is simply engineering whose chief priorities do not lie solely in function or performance.

Good design is good engineering.

When viewing Dieter Rams' principles from an engineering perspective (i.e. thinking about design requirements) they stop being the hard and fast 'rules' a lot of designers treat them as.

For example, a professional video editor doesn't have to be simple (in fact it probably shouldn't be), but it can still be a good design.
iMovie is completely different, simplicity is a huge part of its design, but that doesn't make it better or worse. It simply has different design requirements.
