❝ It makes little sense for a new generation of Apple silicon to debut in iPads.
i’m shocked to hear this take from you, of all people — if the M4 chips are ready, why would Apple wait to release new products with the new chip family? especially if the chips are key to a software feature likely debuting at WWDC?
also, isn’t it possible that the iPads were delayed from their earlier launch date because of issues related to the chips themselves?
@daringfireball I’ve been burned more than once betting against specific gurman info. Instead I ask: what could it mean? Maybe M4 is built on the same silicon process as M3 but it’s a bigger chip with many new “AI” cores added.
Or maybe this is how apple identifies one of these piece of shit leakers who violates the trust of their coworkers.
@daringfireball Apparently, the A17 Pro has double the neural engine performance of the M3, so some sort of neural-beefed-up M3 (or otherwise beefed up A17) may be possible for iPads.
Though I can’t see Apple going away from the M-series for iPads.
@daringfireball@gruber worst case scenario: Apple names the iPad chips “M4” or worse something like “M4 AI” despite minimal speed or efficiency gains, purely as a means to spark conversation about their AI-readiness.
