I was thinking about how I used to go backpacking with my mum and she was always adventurous and fun. One time we went to Chiang Rai together, she hung out with so many hippies and then when I was going to France shortly after she was like ‘oh I got their email you should email them’ and then I ended up staying in France with random people my mum talked to.

It tickles me that not everyone’s mums are like that

@skinnylatte She sounds amazing :)

I'm trying to square this image with your references to growing up with conservative Christianity.

@johnmark most of my church trauma came from the actual church, and not family

Everything I like most about myself: spontaneity, talking to strangers, being street smart and resourceful, being fascinated by people and being endlessly hungry, especially in cultures and languages I don’t know, came from her normalizing this curiosity about the world and the delicious things in it.

It feels obvious, but that’s actually a new realization for me

Pretty sure I can exist, dropped in in any city or town or countryside in the universe, quite well and immediately, because of skills that she taught me. That’s got to count for something.

Trying to plan a trip on this part of the world with her now, feeling sad that we don’t get to do this as much in this decade.

@skinnylatte Do you have any advice for someone that might want to become street smart and gain these skills? Your mother sounds really cool!

@sashin go on micro adventures: no need big trips, just do small ones (even in your city / country or nearby). Take a route you’ve never taken in a familiar place. Go to a neighborhood you’ve never been to. Eat something you don’t know (within dietary preferences). Spend time in a place where people don’t speak your language. When logistical disaster strikes, focus on the adventure rather than the lost time / luggage.

@skinnylatte my mother is similarly adventurous and curious and I’m so glad she instilled this in me. We haven’t managed to travel internationally together in decades but I hope she and I do so again one of these years. :)
