A bit sad today. Maybe it's the weather which has finally broken. 🌧 Might be that I woke up with nasty cramp in my injured foot/ankle. 😖 Possibly that I've decided not to do No Mow May this year because we have a tick infestation in our lawn. 😭 Quite likely a bunch of other things that I can't put into words. 💔
Please send me your little wins, some climate positivity, or even just pictures of your cat. 🐱
Thank you x.

@Snoweider here’s a picture of, and healing vibes from, Rupert the dog. He sympathises with you because he had an operation on his butt last week (😬) so he’s a bit uncomfortable too and hoping for a speedy recovery.

@Snoweider how about a picture of a very teenie tiny calf? His name is Jupiter, and he was born a week ago.

@simon_brooke @Snoweider So do they put two ear tags on because they know that at least one is gonna get ripped out as soon as Jupiter does anything like stick his head through a fence or whatever? Good job that there are no wolves as they would soon learn that calves with massive tags on their ears have no clue who is behind them. What forces them to be tagged in this manner at this stage? Just curious. Nice shot.

@adingbatponder well @simon_brooke will know more but I'm pretty sure it's for traceability so that folk don't all die of BSE?

@Snoweider @adingbatponder So, legally they have to have one tag. But as @adingbatponder suggests, some animals have a bad habit of ripping their tags out. More practically, for me, my cattle have extremely hairy ears, making tags difficult to read. That's why I use such big tags -- anything that makes tags easier to read is helpful in the very stressful situations you sometimes get into when handling cattle.

@simon_brooke @Snoweider Well sheep are easier in my experience and they can have pretty clear paint markings... except the black ones .... good luck with feeding the nation !

@adingbatponder @Snoweider I have this discussion from time to time with my neighbour. He too chose sheep over cattle. I don't agree. Fencing livestock is always a problem, but my fences don't leak. And although my husbandry is almost certainly less skilled than his, my number of deaths, especially of young animals, is more than an order of magnitude fewer. Even when you rear animals for meat -- as I do -- the death of an animal is grief.

But I'll agree sheep are less dangerous to handle!
