I read the Foundation trilogy over the last month or two, turns out I really didn’t remember it well, has to have been well over 30 years since I first read these.
overall I felt kinda meh about it, like maybe the time period when people should read this has ended
@regehr Yeah the Foundation series as a whole — especially including the 4th and 5th books — is kind of meh. The first book (which is actually five novellas) is my favorite though.
@regehr Back when we had workstations and they needed hostnames, I had computers named trantor, terminus, anacreon, korell, askone, siwenna, and tazenda.
@regehr huh. Rama is my favorite novel of his and I reread it fairly regularly. Woo boy did we not go long before making completely pointless references to bouncing boobs. I liked 2010 too, so maybe not as bad as Asimov
@scheidegger@regehr I love the ideas in Asimov and Clarke. their writing styles are minimalistic. I think they're important to read but rereading is not compelling. guys like Herbert, Heinlein, Stephenson and Banks are all more exciting to reread and just soak in the atmosphere and action
@synlogic@regehr their writing styles are empty. Its a writing prompt turned into a novel, I don’t know how else to put it (and to be clear, I grew up on that stuff. It’s just pretty bad in perspective) And it’s not like people didn’t know how to write back then. Wolfe is right there, you know?
Even if old Gibson is mostly style (Peripheral is excellent through and through), at least he knows how to put a sentence together
Heinlein I can't do anymore, I liked him when I was 13 but in the last couple years I retried Moon is a Harsh Mistress and Stranger in a Strange Land and dropped both of them after just a couple chapters
