The last time I was in England for any length of time was almost 20 years ago (how am I even old enough for that to be the case???). I remember that I made tacos for the family I was staying with (I was obsessed even then) and finding the ingredients for it was quite hard - I had to make a lot of replacements. Now there are Mexican and Thai and even bubble tea places in tiny little seaside towns in the north east. It’s quite a change.

I’m also a bit floored about how great the gluten free options are. Everywhere seems to either have a GF menu or else has a binder that has an ingredient matrix in it so they can tell you what is safe for you. I’ve also been to fish and chip places in small seaside towns that just randomly have gluten free fish and chips (and vegan fish!) done in their own dedicated fryer. It’s amazing.

Marks and Spencer also has gluten free boxed sandwiches, which is so awesome. It is so so so so so SO hard to find a quick grab and go takeaway food when you can’t eat gluten (other than sushi and I’ve eaten some abhorrent grocery store and airport sushi) so a boxed sandwich is a frigging dream.

I found Sainsbury’s GF sandwich today, in a train station of all places (a GF grab and go in a transport hub is an extreme level of difficulty normally!) and one of them is egg and cress. Yum.

We were running late because we had a hard time getting a cab and I almost cried that they just had a sandwich for me. In the Ottawa airport my only real option was such that was more than $20 and was a contender for the worst sushi I have ever had.

I’ve been scoping out all the grocery stores to see who has sandwiches and what kinds. Most grocery stores do, as do Boots. Tesco Locals seem to be limited to egg and tomato but most or the others have at least two choices. Prêt à Manger needs to get with the times because they somehow have no options!!! For the grocery stores, it’s best to go earlier in the day ensure you can find a sandwich. I’ve been grabbing them for my light lunch bites.
