In a time when the western world is so divided it’s on the brink of civil war, there are still two issues that unite everyone: You don’t shoot puppies in the face. And who ever came up with this useless brainfart and forced it on us needs to pay

tayfonay,
@tayfonay@beige.party avatar

@Kierkegaanks I just throw the whole bottle on the ground now

Kierkegaanks,
@Kierkegaanks@beige.party avatar

@tayfonay 😂

We pay $0.1-0.2 that we get back if we return them, so someone will collect them if we ragequit our bottles. (Return rate is like 95%)

tayfonay,
@tayfonay@beige.party avatar

@Kierkegaanks I haven’t seen these caps in the US, only over in Europe. I suspect Americans would take this as an attack on freedom and come up with a totally clever insult like freedom fries was

Kierkegaanks,
@Kierkegaanks@beige.party avatar

@tayfonay it’s a bit like when the rightwing liberals forced like an 800% tax hike on starch based plastic grocery store bags that gets used as trash bags in sweden because there are plastic bags polluting rivers in south east asia

(And in the next election the green party got the blame for it because people don’t read the news and the greens here always come up with dumb stuff)

tayfonay,
@tayfonay@beige.party avatar

@Kierkegaanks I first encountered them in Ireland and was like "oh, this is clever, so people don't lose the caps all over the place" and then I drank out of the bottle.

Kierkegaanks,
@Kierkegaanks@beige.party avatar

@tayfonay i suspect the decision makers skipped the second step

tayfonay,
@tayfonay@beige.party avatar

@Kierkegaanks they only drink from the finest crystal glassware

Kierkegaanks,
@Kierkegaanks@beige.party avatar

@tayfonay you spill pouring it too, as people who drink milk of any kind has learned the hard way

Sir_Osis_of_Liver,
@Sir_Osis_of_Liver@beige.party avatar

@Kierkegaanks @tayfonay

When it comes to milk, we're dealing with our own situation over here.

Kierkegaanks,
@Kierkegaanks@beige.party avatar

@Sir_Osis_of_Liver @tayfonay This is a canadian thing, right?

Sir_Osis_of_Liver,
@Sir_Osis_of_Liver@beige.party avatar

@Kierkegaanks @tayfonay

Yeah, specifically an Eastern Canadian thing.

It actually works pretty well in the home. Less waste than the rigid plastic jugs, though still not as good as the re-used glass bottles.

Kierkegaanks,
@Kierkegaanks@beige.party avatar

@Sir_Osis_of_Liver @tayfonay we use rigid carton with a thin polymer coating and an inexplicable screw cap. Glass bottles have big drawbacks too though

tantramar,
@tantramar@nojack.easydns.ca avatar

@Kierkegaanks @Sir_Osis_of_Liver @tayfonay yeah, we have those cartons, too; that’s mostly what I buy. the bags are great, but you can only get them in 3 × 1L quantities. I don’t consume anywhere near enough milk to go through that much before it goes off. Making it through 2L can be a stretch.

Kierkegaanks,
@Kierkegaanks@beige.party avatar

@tantramar @Sir_Osis_of_Liver @tayfonay but it’s high pasteurized with extended shelf life?

tantramar,
@tantramar@nojack.easydns.ca avatar

@Kierkegaanks @Sir_Osis_of_Liver @tayfonay I’ve no idea what that means, but milk typically expires in something like 3 weeks?

Kierkegaanks,
@Kierkegaanks@beige.party avatar

@tantramar @Sir_Osis_of_Liver @tayfonay low pasteurized expire in like a week. Raw milk tastes better. Not sure if it’s the tuberculosis that does it

glasspusher,
@glasspusher@beige.party avatar

@Kierkegaanks @tantramar @Sir_Osis_of_Liver @tayfonay

I hear tuberculosis makes you appreciate a lot of things more than you used to

When Mum was still in school, there was public testing for TB. The patch was applied to the student's arms for a day then could be analysed to see if they had been infected.

When Mum came home from school, my grandmother removed the patch, and only put it back just before Mum left for school the next day.

Grandmum was very concerned that they'd get a positive test. TB was considered a disease only poor people got, and didn't want to risk it.

Many decades later, mum was in hospital and during some screening it was noted that she had scarring in her lungs consistent with a TB infection.

I still have a difficult time reconciling that story with the Grandmum I knew. She was always very concerned for people and their health. Everyone has a blind spot I suppose.
