One way to get exercise...

Fuck up some code running on your home alarm system.

  • Crawling in the loft.
  • Reaching up to smoke alarms, CO alarms, PIRs.
  • Unscrewing panels from doors to get to locks.

I managed to only zap half of my devices this time, but still, knackering.

Each had to be retrieved (and some are in light switches and some in the loft, and so on), plugged in to debug/test to reflash, and upgraded, and put back.

I do this so I don't have to do at the office, 2 hours away!

Oh, and what did I fuck up?

I changed from ESP IDF 5.1.1 to 5.2.1

It had an assert in UART code (easy one). Meant my buffer lengths were magically no longer valid.

And they have seriously changed something subtle in mesh code, maybe making it work properly, not sure. As usual, documented settings fail, so trial and error.

My various fixes and tests were a lot of work, and one, just one, broke things enough I could not OTA them. Bugger.

@revk make sure your test devices are ones you can reach!

@penguin42 Well, yes, I started with that, and, well, that was working...

I have extra devices on the bench for the purpose.

I do try to avoid the hard work if possible, honest.

The real danger is when I mess up the update means, which only breaks after the update, and then update the office... One reason I do an update twice on my own system.
