In Switzerland, a mobile overpass bridge is used to carry out road work without stopping traffic

A massive mobile bridge on the highway where workers can work and traffic goes above it

...Though it obviously helps to have long straight road segments...

@stux wow! That seems like it would be very awkward and expensive compared to closing a lane.

@johnefrancis oh yes for sure!

But from a technical standpoint it’s quite cool

@stux @johnefrancis How do they install the mobile overpass bridge without stopping traffic?

@stux on rural highways here, they use a "train" where they grind, recycle, and re-lay the asphalt in a continuous process. One full lane at a time. It does a few kms in a day. But even with moderate traffic, it's a challenge not having a lot of accidents and killing workers. They have to setup escorts to lead the traffic. So that's pretty awkward too. If this overpass moves along, it's a lot safer.

@johnefrancis @stux It's a pretty cool solution, independent of the cost.

I worry about the guy walking backwards behind a reversing truck though. Eeek.

@stux, nice. Utilitarian.
