@jeffjarvis Unrelated: I just realized that the PressReader database now even has the Süddeutsche Zeitung. PressReader started out with a bunch of provincial Canadian newspapers but now has some of the big ones, from the Straits Times to the NYT. PressReader is available at U.S. public libraries, including here in Nashville, as well as public libraries in Germany. Seems to be getting bigger.

Their instructions show the possibility of signing in with a library card but then I don't find the option on the sign-up page. Is that nation-specific?
