xfce4 really is the best choice for this tiny intel atom laptop. it's not just the frugal use of resources. it's also that window title bars are narrower. optimal for this 1366 x 768 display.

their inofficial tagline is "XFCE. We Are So Conservative, We Only Just Released Version 4."

"XFCE: Fuck Your Feature Request, We Are Fighting Code Rot."

@lritter TBH, I'm quite happy with whatever their model is.
They did add features over time (I think when I started using it they didn't even support xinerama or similar, so you couldn't move windows from one screen to another, and the filemanager wasn't able to mount USB sticks and such), but they clearly work iteratively, instead of rewriting the whole thing every few years like GNOME and KDE do.

@Doomed_Daniel @lritter I also love xfce and am very comfortable with it; but their biggest issue right now is migrating to Wayland, which requires too much work and is going slow AFAIK.

@matiasgoldberg @lritter
Yeah, the wayland transition could go faster.. OTOH, my impression is that Wayland still has issues (on other desktops), maybe when XFCE gets there, the Wayland infrastructure is finally ready to replace X11 without causing pain

@Doomed_Daniel gnome and kde just hate getting told their dick is small, constantly playing catch up with who swings the biggest schlong at the time.

xfce is like "our desktop is for pussies, thats why our logo is a mouse"

@Doomed_Daniel @lritter yeah, XFCE gets TONS of updates but unlike the other wm's they tend to be iterative improvements. Compared to gnome where each new set of patch notes is like "removed more user options, also made it harder to override styles and themes, also we've decided nobody ever needs a scrollbar anymore, everyone uses touchscreens on their desktop right?"

@lritter
I've been using XFCE for almost 20 years now, for me it has always been xfce4 =)

Maybe they'll bump the version when (if?) they support Wayland..

@Doomed_Daniel @Doomed_Daniel that makes the tagline even better. i made the adjustment.
