TFW your spouse's iMac has 20Mb(!) free out of 2Tb because they tried to use Adobe Cloud for something and now all attempts to reboot keep hanging (filesystem is okay, though) so the next step is to try for Target Disk mode and a cable to a laptop in order to delete cached junk and logfiles until it will boot enough for them to clean up properly …

UNIXen have never been great about coping with full disks/SSDs, but this is a new nadir, and fuck you very much, Adobe Creative Suite.

@cstross I had an older mac in which i ran adobe cloud for all of a month (to touch up one file in illustrator) and I could not get rid of it. I uninstalled it and it was still there. I deleted all the files including the sneaky ones and they all came back. Occasionally it would go nuts and eat the disk or all the memory. I ended up having to wipe the whole machine to get rid of it. I used illustrator for 30 years. Never ever, ever ever ever again.

@lemay @cstross Adobe CS and MS Office are probably the worst things you can install on a Mac.

@alper @lemay No, the worst thing you can install on a Mac is obviously Windows ME.

@cstross

Adobe is an atrocity that disguises itself as an abomination.

@cstross This is why I have an entirely separate Mac solely for running a 2014 copy of Photoshop and Illustrator CS6, before the Clown Worms dug in.

@jwz @cstross I still have my 2012 Macbook Pro because it has a Windows 2000 VM where I can run my old student-license Photoshop 5.5 and Illustrator 8.0 installs from 1999!

oh gods they're 25 years old this fall

lol i guess xD

@cstross Not even recovery os boots? Aka hold down power on key until it tells you.

@waldi Recovery booted and let me run Disk Utility, but actually coming up in safe mode failed.

Got into Target Disk mode, brought it up as an external volume on a laptop, now clearing out cruft. (It had > 70Gb of garbage to get rid of.)
