Admin, if you're reading this, consider using a CDN to deliver your media.

You can use services like Cloudflare (for free) or Bunny CDN (for cheap).

Recurrently, images and videos in a post fail to load here because it took too much time to download them.

And indeed, when you click to see the media, it takes a while to finish.

With a CDN you'll free your server from this load and distribute it via the CDN, from the closest point to your users.

Or, you know, other servers creating a cache of your images and videos. Mastodon does this by default.

Other platforms, like Akkoma, loads the file directly from your instance, so it's another burden taken away from your server if you use a CDN.

FYI, maybe off-topic, but Backblaze had another 6-hour throttling situation overnight for b2 customers again resulting is several thousand dead for me. I triggered a retry and all but 78 went through this morning.

I groaned about it.

@paul I did notice it yesterday. Even your instance with 4 active users was affected. I guess the time will come for the other instance where I'm sysadm will have to move almost 1 TB of media to another provider.

But as you've said, we get what we pay for. Budget storage, with budget hard disks and budget networking.

Backblaze is throttling again today. Not just Mastodon servers, but for other platforms, uses also.

I've been reading new reports from users on other posting platforms with the same issues.

Today, the API is sending back message, "SlowDown: Too busy. Please see b2 documentation to learn when to retry."

Moving on. Now I just need to find a storage home & easy transfer

@paul this last week was the worst time to their services since I started using them a couple of years ago.

But today I received a green light to move away the media from the other instance I'm sysadm.

It's currently in progress, on its way to Cloudflare R2. It costs US$ 0,015/GB but there are no egress fees and I expect a better service and infra than OVH, for example.

What process are you using to transfer? Rclone? I think I will use Flexify.io again. It won't cost too much.

I need to setup my system with files.oldfriends.live instead of using the bucket as the URL. I saw some that allowed it to first be local then get moved to buckets, to prevent cdn failures.

This is getting out of my comfort zone. 🤭

If you have a good Mastodon object storage guide, send me a link.

@paul yes, I'm going with the slower-but-free way, using rclone as middleman :ms_hand_over_mouth:

Not so "free" as the API calls will certainly be costly, but yeah, no 3rd party service.

I'm not using any fancy setup here, I have just pointed the cdn subdomain to the R2 bucket and that's it.

No problems so far, as the CDN is also from Cloudflare. Everything in their internal network.

I have rclone trauma.😂 A decade ago, I misconfigured rclone doing a backup of my personal computer and lost everything in both directions. Luckily, I caught it early.

For my personal files, I have backups of my backups, so it was an easy fix. I've been afraid of rclone since.🤭

I've been reading the rclone guides over the past week but decided, $5.00 to transfer my instance with Flexify was worth it. I still have a credit from the first transfer.
