Threads has crossed 50 million signups and I’m highly annoyed that Mastodon’s signup flow is still super clunky—after years of begging the project to do something about it (it’s better than it used to be, but there’s still lots of room for improvement).

dopeshark,

@thomasfuchs things are sadly hard when you don't have an infinite amount of money to back you up 🫥

@thomasfuchs
Threads is cross-sign up from instagram so it's not a comparable challenge.

httpjames,

@thomasfuchs It depends on the app. @ivory has a nice authentication flow, but I agree the official app needs improvement

@thomasfuchs I doubt sign up is the main issue for users.

From experience most users want a text search functionality on all servers.

They dont like using hashtags.

@nosherwan rn Threads only has user search, no search for content

@thomasfuchs true, my comment was more about mastodon user demands. :)

@thomasfuchs There are only a few who work on it still. Right? To grow they need to generate revenue to hire more.

@SloanStudio a good signup flow doesn’t have anything to do with how many people work on it

Zarabadoo,

@thomasfuchs @SloanStudio to add to that, it is an open source project. It is built by its community. Sure, paying people helps someone spend more time on it. But it will be a pitiful amount compared to what some for-profit org would pay. It would still have to be a labor of love.

zbrown,

@thomasfuchs it’s been so long since I did it… but how is it anything more than username and pass?

rcpierce,
@rcpierce@mastodon.online avatar

@zbrown @thomasfuchs You have to pick an instance, with most instances being unknown to a first-timer.

thomasfuchs,

@rcpierce @zbrown fwiw the mobile app now defaults to mastodon.social (can optionally change it), which removes a lot of friction

This is fine because people can move servers once they found something they like

@thomasfuchs @zbrown Yeah, I get that. But still, there IS a learning curve here dissimilar to the other places. I’m not knocking that, but just being realistic in how that translates to the “masses” wanting to be a part of it.

@thomasfuchs The barrier to entry on this app is too dang high which is really unfortunate
