On Mastodon you need to follow quite a lot of people or you won't see much. Here's what I do:

  1. See an interesting post.
  2. Check their timeline. In their most recent few posts, is there something else I find interesting?
  3. If yes, follow.

Same-same. Sample size is either three posts or three days.

@tomw Mastodon became viable to me around 100 follows. Some of which are mirror bots of news from Twitter feeds, which isn't an ideal situation but it really helps ease the transition.

@ericheiken Yeah, I did that at first but found the tone of a lot of Twitter-mirrored stuff jarring - it was often responding to a conversation that is happening there but not here, and in quite angry terms

@tomw good to know. I only have a few big news organizations like AP and also the Formula 1 account. I never actually engage with those anyway. It's mostly to keep me in the loop.

pileofgarbage,

@tomw follow me you cowards. or do you not enjoy being disappointed!?

@tomw Step 1 is a problem for as that's where The Algorithm would typically help (for better or worse). I'd suggest checking the Local feed (if the instance is based around a community) and/or search and follow some . We all need to hashtag more, for that reason.

@GlasWolf Yeah hashtags are a good way in right at the start especially
