Listening to co-workers complaining about how their garden is too big and that it takes too long to do the gardening.

Other co-workers talking about multiple foreign holidays they take.

Meanwhile I'm trying to decide if I can afford a large pizza tonight.

Btw, some of these co-workers are the ones who told me they take the good food from the donation box and replace it with smaller cheaper stuff.

Or she will hate you for it when she finds out.

Just watched Wayne's World and my Q I forgot how good that movie is. It's also connected to so many childhood memories of making skate videos with my friends.

I just wish I didn't have work in the morning so I could watch Wayne's World 2.

mikey,
@mikey@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

@Bridgemakes I can't count the number of times I quote that movie, and nobody around me has any idea what I'm talking about.

Much like my MST3K quotes.

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

mikey,
@mikey@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

@RickiTarr I live in Ohio.
Pros:
I like that we get a nice mix of weather, without the most dangerous extremes. Yes we get some cold, and storms but rarely anything that destroys a city.
Also cost of living is decently low.

Cons:
State has gone from swing to red over the course of my life. I know plenty of progressive minded people, but increasingly this feels like the wrong state for us.

Low cost of living is tied to a lot economic depression, caused by labor market shifts.

mikey,
@mikey@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

@RickiTarr Oh absolutely it does. Ohio is as it always has been a deep purple state. The problems are a combination of the gerrymandering, a lock on the government, deeply conservative policies, and a resulting flight of progressive people and those oppressed by those policies, causing the state to turn more red.

mikey,
@mikey@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

@RickiTarr For reference, my US House representative is Joyce, a Republican. If you look at his district its very carefully drawn to avoid the only large cities in the entire region...

Is "fast fashion" just way the mass market apparel industry works now? Any chance it will fade away?

mikey,
@mikey@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

@shoq Not likely, unfortunately. Planned obsolescence works better for capitalism. More expensive clothes that lasted forever would suffer the fate of kneecapping their own growth.

Good morning. I had a dream that Trump dropped out of the race, and J.D. Vance became the GOP nominee. I woke up sweating. We traded a completely incompetent scumbag for a marginally competent scumbag. It felt so real. It is something we’d do. You know I’m right. Be afraid.

mikey,
@mikey@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

@shoq The one thing I'll say is Trump is too much of a narcissist for this to be likely. He wouldn't drop out of the race, even if it meant his party as a whole had better odds. Because he really doesn't care about his party, or anyone else.

Using your face or thumbprint to unlock your phone is convenient, but courts may grant less legal protection to biometrics. EFF’s Andrew Crocker spoke to @Gizmodo about passwords and the Fifth Amendment. https://gizmodo.com/stop-using-your-face-or-thumb-to-unlock-your-phone-1851438205

@argv_minus_one Not a widespread option, but @GrapheneOS offers PIN scramble. Each time the PIN screen is offered the numbers are in different positions. Reeks havoc with muscle memory, but once you're used to it it's not that difficult.
