Although the reason is yet unknown

Nothing in the article seems to justify the title, but it’s one of this terribly-designed web sites with giant breaks in the text and non sequiturs. At one point it mentions “pollen,” and I can’t figure out of that’s a clue to what scientists think is causing it; or a typo; or something that leaked in from another article.

They found the polynya was brought on by complex interactions between the wind, ocean currents, and the unique geography of the ocean floor, transporting heat and salt towards the surface.
