#VoidLinux users /devs :
I see on the package update changes it says "dbus-elogind: remove package, migrate to regular dbus" Does this happen automatically or do I have to swap over manually. Also are any configs or services affected ?
Thanks in advance ;)
@JustineSmithies been meaning to ask, what features of #VoidLinux make it different/better compared to Arch?
I had a brief look at their website, and their own description sounded very much like Arch with a different package manager. Admittedly I didn't have time to dig very deep through their documentation, but they didn't really seem to be promoting any particularly unique features. I'm sure I've missed something though.
@teapot_ben@JustineSmithies I'm not an expert myself. I read back in the day some discussions of musl against glibc, and... There are some differences, but for day to day usage, software compatibility may be the elephant in the room. The rest seems to boil down to very technical aspects with hardly a real impact for most use cases. If musl is really lighter, or faster, or the contrary, I couldn't notice.
And yes, unless you are good with Noveau, glibc seems like the right choice. ;)
What's the idiomatic way, in #voidlinux, to install software from versioned controlled sources? That is, building "latest main/master"rather than a specific release?
Something similar to "foo-git" AUR packages.
As far as I can tell, xbps doesn't really support this use case (though I hope I'm wrong, and have missed something obvious)?
Hmm had my first big issue on #VoidLinux. My laptop wouldn't boot and stopped after unlocking the FDE once it announced it was using linux6.5.5_2. Recovery just ends in a kernel panic so I booted the previous version and all is good.
Submitted a bug report ASAP as reinstalling the kernel still yeilds the same result I never get the loading init.
@JustineSmithies I use PARTLABEL to identify the swap partition in /etc/crypttab which then gets mapped to /dev/mapper/swap as a swap partition that can be added in /etc/fstab like a normal swap.
If all goes well with my #VoidLinux#ZFSBootMenu install tomorrow I might be tempted to give #Zsh a try instead of my usual trusty #Bash ?
Anyone want to chime in with reasons for and against zsh ?
@JustineSmithies If you haven't seen it already, I wrote a small blog-post a few weeks ago about how you can make the bash prompt a bit more bearable by configuring readline. Especially for completions there are a few settings that really improve usability, at least for me.
As you know I'm perfectly happy running #VoidLinux as my daily as it's fantastic and I really love #xbps it's package manager. But just lately I keep getting these voices daring me to go purchase an AX210 WiFi card for my #ThinkPad P14s AMD Gen 1 as it has a Meditek card so it'll run #FreeBSD .
Yes you're going to say that I can't be that happy if I'm willing to take the plunge but I honestly am. Maybe it's just the unknown or even #FOMO ? 🤪
Will those voices in my head please give it a rest !
Tempting to try a #VoidLinux#bcachefs install on an old laptop or pc now it's officially made it into the Linux 6.7 kernel. You know just for research purposes you understand. Like seeing how it compares to my daily drivers #ZFS filesystem. 🤔
I've sort of cobbled together how I'd install #VoidLinux using #ZFSBootMenu on my laptop. I've also included a separate swap partition just in case I did ever use suspend to disk.
Would someone care to cast their eyes over it before I push it to my blog. As an added bonus I'm going to tie myself up and get my better half to beat me around the head. Wait no! I meant to say I will wipe my laptop again and reinstall as per my installation document to make sure it works. 😂
Haha I finally have #Qtile running on #VoidLinux !
My issue was that I already had packages installed from when I tried to run using pip packages and the Qtile git repo. So I removed all of that and I'm good to go.😍
@Anachron I've not tried yet as ATM Qtile use wlroots15 whereas I've 16 installed for River.
I'm thinking that the next release of Qtile is away to drop soon that is based on wlroots16 . Hence why I'm hesitant to ho any further just yet.
Just installed the XFCE variant of #voidlinux. Then went ahead and installed a tiling window manager, in this case river, simply via sudo xbps-install river. I expected river to be selectable during login, where you choose which session you want, but it doesn't show up. Does anyone know what's missing?
If you prefer to have a fancy graphical login prompt you will need to use a display manager. River does not officially support display managers, but getting them to work is trivial. You only need to define a river session, which can be done by creating a file called river.desktop in /usr/share/wayland-sessions/ with the following content.
[Desktop Entry]
Name=River
Comment=A dynamic tiling Wayland compositor
Exec=river
Type=Application
@Anachron Wow, that blog post was an absolute gold mine for a beginner! Lots of useful info. I've been googling around a bit but didn't come across that one. Thanks!
Prepping ready for the big daily driver wipe tomorrow. Making sure I've backed everything up and printing off notes ready for the #VoidLinux#ZFS / #ZFSBootMenu install.
Fingers crossed this will go as smoothly as it did on my test laptop. 🤞 :void:
@JustineSmithies Not seen that, and really only know zfs in the server context, hence the question. Also, that zfs seems to shine best with multiple disks, not usual in a laptop. Such a pity about its licencing, isn't it?
