To get that “full desktop” experience I am reinstalling #VoidLinux with the @xfce iso. I am still staying with #musl. I will probably install #Cinnamon too.

#Gnome was okay, but the inability to easily install the extensions was a no bueno for me. My gnome needs to have some spice; vanilla doesn’t cut it 🌶️

This was me when doing a musl build on Gentoo

@Wyatt I don't mind things being a little different but I didn't think it would be the equivalent of Walmart vs convenience store.

Will those voices in my head please give it a rest !
Tempting to try a install on an old laptop or pc now it's officially made it into the Linux 6.7 kernel. You know just for research purposes you understand. Like seeing how it compares to my daily drivers filesystem. 🤔

@JustineSmithies hides behind Justine's sofa and whispers Doooooo iiiiiitttt! You need bcachefs! Julie will be really impressed by it!

@teapot_ben Haha even Julie is laughing so that's the all important go ahead then communicated. 😂

I just moved from gentoo to . Over all gentoo was amazing but I just am lazy and I don't want to wait wait ~1h for update.

met,
@met@fosstodon.org avatar

@TheTuzu Just in case you didn't know Gentoo just announced they will be(/are?) providing binary packages as well.

TheTuzu,
@TheTuzu@fosstodon.org avatar

@met I know, even before that I was using some binarys, but if I was to going full binary I could just use another distro. I know there is more to gentoo than just compiling, but I also didn't want to unmask packages all the time.

Finally uploaded my first post of the new year to my blog on how I install my Root on setup. If you spot anything wrong please don't hesitate to let me know. 😉

@JustineSmithies Looks good! I just finished doing this on Debian.

JustineSmithies,
@JustineSmithies@fosstodon.org avatar

OK now I've revised my Install document. Revisions include removing kernel resume support as I wouldn't really use suspend to disk and changing the separate swap partition to an encrypted one for more security thanks to info supplied by @dwarmstrong . Anybody fancy a proof read to see what dreadful mistakes have been made by myself ?? 😍

@dwarmstrong How did your #VoidLinux #ZFSBootMenu foray go ?

dwarmstrong,
@dwarmstrong@fosstodon.org avatar

@JustineSmithies Good! Up-and-running on two systems now with ZFSBootMenu + native ZFS encryption + separate LUKS encrypted swap partition.

Second system is what I'm typing on right now with the addition of Wayland + Sway.

dwarmstrong,
@dwarmstrong@fosstodon.org avatar

@JustineSmithies I use PARTLABEL to identify the swap partition in /etc/crypttab which then gets mapped to /dev/mapper/swap as a swap partition that can be added in /etc/fstab like a normal swap.

I posted a small HOWTO about encrypting swap ...

https://www.dwarmstrong.org/encrypt-swap/

dwarmstrong,
@dwarmstrong@fosstodon.org avatar

Inspired by the example set by @JustineSmithies I'm closing out the year with a Void install on ZFS-Root + native encryption + ZFSBootMenu. :void: :linux:

@dwarmstrong Here is my latest doc which has a couple of mistakes e.g I need to change sda for nvme in a few places but if you know you know. 🙃

You might want to change partition size of swap too or totally miss it out ??

JustineSmithies,
@JustineSmithies@fosstodon.org avatar

@JustineSmithies@fosstodon.org avatar

I've sort of cobbled together how I'd install using on my laptop. I've also included a separate swap partition just in case I did ever use suspend to disk.
Would someone care to cast their eyes over it before I push it to my blog. As an added bonus I'm going to tie myself up and get my better half to beat me around the head. Wait no! I meant to say I will wipe my laptop again and reinstall as per my installation document to make sure it works. 😂

Well it's booted and I'm in as root for now. I see a few errors on screen there which I can hopefully resolve. Not sure about the "failed to lock /etc/exports.d/zfs.exports.lock: No such file or directory" ????
So all in all I take this as a win as I did expect it to boot first time. I have been documenting my steps though in case I need to redo this install.

If all goes well with my #VoidLinux #ZFSBootMenu install tomorrow I might be tempted to give #Zsh a try instead of my usual trusty #Bash ?
Anyone want to chime in with reasons for and against zsh ?

@jonathanmatthews 🙃 😂

lhp,
@lhp@mastodon.social avatar

@JustineSmithies If you haven't seen it already, I wrote a small blog-post a few weeks ago about how you can make the bash prompt a bit more bearable by configuring readline. Especially for completions there are a few settings that really improve usability, at least for me.

https://leon_plickat.srht.site/writing/use-bash-configure-readline/article.html

JustineSmithies,
@JustineSmithies@fosstodon.org avatar

Prepping ready for the big daily driver wipe tomorrow. Making sure I've backed everything up and printing off notes ready for the / install.
Fingers crossed this will go as smoothly as it did on my test laptop. 🤞 :void:

withaveeay,
@withaveeay@mastodon.scot avatar

@JustineSmithies Not seen that, and really only know zfs in the server context, hence the question. Also, that zfs seems to shine best with multiple disks, not usual in a laptop. Such a pity about its licencing, isn't it?

JustineSmithies,
@JustineSmithies@fosstodon.org avatar

@withaveeay Yeah it is a pity but I understand why. I suppose we can't have everything can we.

dwarmstrong,
@dwarmstrong@fosstodon.org avatar

Encountered an issue with pipewire on Void Linux and SwayWM that's new to me.

When either started manually in the terminal or auto-started in the Sway config, pipewire(-pulse) sound works OK.

When exiting and restarting Sway: sound fails.

Workaround: Kill existing pipewire processes, and start pipewire upon sway launch.

Put in shell script ...

#!/usr/bin/env bash
kill -9 $(pidof pipewire)
pipewire & pipewire-pulse &

... and auto-start script in sway config.

Anachron,
@Anachron@fosstodon.org avatar

@dwarmstrong may I suggest to run a user service and stop all user services on sway shutdown?

I can pastebin my setup if you'd like which works flawlessly.

dwarmstrong,
@dwarmstrong@fosstodon.org avatar

@Anachron Sure ... I'm open to alternatives. Thanks!

JustineSmithies,
@JustineSmithies@fosstodon.org avatar

I quit systemd based distros at the beginning of the year in favour of a runit based init system running under and don't miss systemd one bit.

New systemd update will bring Windows’ infamous Blue Screen of Death to Linux

justsoup,
@justsoup@mstdn.social avatar

@JustineSmithies "Ah, finally. Without systemd my system is so much in-line with UNIX! Now, to remove the bloated and over-extended Linux kernel..."

(Just kidding. I love the fact that we have alternatives to systemd in-case the project explodes. Void Linux is one of the most stable distros I have ever used! Only second to Solus.)

JustineSmithies,
@JustineSmithies@fosstodon.org avatar

@mah I just find the systemd system too bloated for my liking and I should point out that you've always been able to find the causes of boot failures through log files and if you didn't know the answer you just looked it up online or asked. To me it's becoming too much like Windows. That is of course just my opinion and others will disagree .

JustineSmithies,
@JustineSmithies@fosstodon.org avatar

OMG Will you guys in my head please be quiet !

As you know I'm perfectly happy running as my daily as it's fantastic and I really love it's package manager. But just lately I keep getting these voices daring me to go purchase an AX210 WiFi card for my P14s AMD Gen 1 as it has a Meditek card so it'll run .
Yes you're going to say that I can't be that happy if I'm willing to take the plunge but I honestly am. Maybe it's just the unknown or even ? 🤪

@Tionisla @petlib Can I ask you both as to what made you switch from Linux and stay with FreeBSD or similar ?

JustineSmithies,

Been playing with the hrmpf rescue system, built on #VoidLinux on my test laptop to try and get Void on #ZFS working but so far no joy. I've tried various install scripts and failed but It's not going to beat me as I will crack it yet.

https://github.com/leahneukirchen/hrmpf

brubarwal,
@brubarwal@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@JustineSmithies I’ve had success with the #zfsbootmenu procedure for installing void via hrmph. Not a script, but easy copy paste if you can ssh in from another machine

JustineSmithies,
@JustineSmithies@fosstodon.org avatar

@brubarwal Do you have any links to notes for your install ? Did you do a UEFI or MBR setup ?

JustineSmithies,
@JustineSmithies@fosstodon.org avatar

Tempted to explore on after spinning up a test laptop. The setup for an encrypted system seems straightforward and boot up should be a tad quicker when unlocking compared to grub being slow. Also snapshots is a thing and being able to recover from accidentally deleting files. Any other Void users have experience with ZFS ??

@Anachron Yeah I saw that thanks.

ntzm,

Re-installed my work laptop with instead of . Was easy enough to set up.

The package manager xbps is good, but sadly missing a few packages that I would like:
josm (although you can get a flatpak of this)
hyprland (maybe)
aws cli v2

I mainly switched because I was on an old version of Ubuntu and was worried about stuff breaking, and I had got loads of extra cruft, so I felt like a fresh install.

Into the Void (Linux) on my daily driver laptop. Root encryption + BTRFS + Openbox. Just getting started but I'm liking it! 🙂
